The dramatic win sees Western United leapfrog Melbourne Victory into fourth place on the ladder, while Victory drop to fifth after what was an agonizing late collapse. Western United will be buoyed by their incredible comeback as they prepare to travel to Perth Glory, who have been struggling this season. Meanwhile, Melbourne Victory will look to bounce back in their next match as they head to Adelaide United, a side that will provide another tough challenge as both teams aim to secure crucial points in the race for the top positions.
Western United came from behind three times to complete a stunning late turnaround. After seemingly being out of the game on multiple occasions, they delivered two stoppage-time goals to steal all three points right at the death. Hiroshi Ibusuki was the hero once again, clinching the dramatic winner that sent the away fans into raptures. It was an unforgettable game of football, where Victory thought they had done enough, only to see Western snatch the victory in the most dramatic of circumstances. What a match!
As the second half unfolded, Western United came out stronger and began to put Victory under pressure. It was their persistence that eventually paid off, with Walatee scoring a well-taken goal to bring the game back to level terms. Western’s attacking threat continued to grow as they sought a winner, pushing for that crucial goal as Victory began to tire. The tension was mounting and a late strike from Santos gave Victory the lead once again, looking to seal the points and snatch a dramatic victory. However, the match had more twists left in store as Western United showed remarkable resilience. In stoppage time, Botic rose to meet a cross from the right and nodded in a powerful header, sending the match to a fair draw and adding an unbelievable twist. But the drama didn’t stop there, as Victory’s hopes of holding onto the lead were dashed in the dying moments when Ibusuki scored his second of the game with a composed finish, securing the most dramatic of comebacks for Western United.
Melbourne Victory looked to be in control at half-time with a lead. The match started with Victory dominating possession and creating the first breakthrough when defender Hamill ventured forward to slot home the opening goal. Western responded with a well-taken goal from Ibusuki, who slotted in Garuccio's cross to level the scores. Victory regained their advantage later in the half when Fornaroli linked up with Arzani to score a well-worked goal, putting Victory up at the break.
