Brisbane Roar remain winless and stuck at the foot of the ladder, unable to capitalize on their chances in a hard-fought loss to Western United. They will host Central Coast Mariners next, hoping to break their slump. Meanwhile, Western United climb to fifth on the ladder, continuing their strong run with a well-managed performance. They will now look to build on this momentum as they travel to Perth Glory in their next match.
In the final moments, Western United remained resolute in their defensive efforts, managing the game expertly to see out the victory. Brisbane continued to press, but Western’s disciplined defensive play and ability to retain possession in the closing stages ultimately proved decisive. Despite some late pressure from the Roar, Western’s resilience saw them through to a hard-fought win.
The second half was more open, with both sides creating plenty of opportunities in an end-to-end affair. Waddingham tested Sutton early on, forcing another solid save, and had another chance later in the half but fired wide from inside the box, leaving Brisbane to rue missed opportunities. Western managed to maintain their advantage through well-organized defending and composed possession play. Brisbane, despite making numerous changes to freshen up their attack, struggled to break down Western’s defensive structure. As the match wore on, Western’s ability to control possession in midfield became more evident, with the Roar finding it difficult to generate any sustained pressure.
The match started with both teams showing early signs of sloppiness, struggling to find any real rhythm or create clear-cut chances. Brisbane Roar and Western United both appeared tentative in the opening stages, with little in the way of meaningful attacking play. However, as the first half progressed, the intensity increased, and Brisbane began to find their feet. Brazete had the first real opportunity of the match, forcing a strong save from Sutton, while moments later, Jelacic found himself one-on-one with Sutton but was denied once again by the Western keeper. These missed chances would prove costly for Brisbane. Thurgate won a penalty after being brought down inside the box, and Ibusuki stepped up to convert calmly into the top left corner, giving Western a crucial lead just before the break. Brisbane had one last chance to equalize in the dying moments of the half, with Halloran firing wide when he really should have done better, leaving Brisbane frustrated as they went into the break trailing.
90+4'
O'Shea swings in the dangerous corner from the right, aiming for a last-minute chance for Brisbane, but Leonard rises to head it clear. That clearance looks to have sealed it for Western.
90+3'
O'Shea finds Halloran just outside the box, and he quickly shifts the ball to Hingert inside the right of the area. Hingert goes down under a challenge from Shamoon, but the referee waves play on as Shamoon clearly won the ball. It was a close call, but the referee decides there was no foul, much to the dismay of the Brisbane players, who were hoping for a penalty.
90+1'
Shamoon finds Ibusuki on the left flank, and his first touch takes him past Herrington, who clips him from behind. Despite already being on a yellow card, Herrington escapes a second booking as the referee only awards the free kick.
