Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as Atalanta and Arsenal played out a scoreless stalemate to take a valuable point and clean sheet apiece in their Champions League opener; I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage; I’ve been Rory Morrow and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - Atalanta’s next match sees them face Como at home on Monday night in Serie A. Arsenal’s next assignment is a biggie as they travel to the Etihad Stadium to face champions, Manchester City, who’ve made a 100% winning start, in the Premier League.
For Arsenal, ahead of Sunday's crunch Premier League meeting with Manchester City, this represents a well-earned point on the road to commence their Champions League campaign. Raya excelled when called upon, Saliba was, again, solid as a rock denying Lookman an opportunity with an impeccable late tackle. It didn't quite click for The Gunners in attack tonight, but with Havertz knitting the play from a deeper role, a more precise pass could have seen them score. Mikel Arteta will gladly accept a point and clean sheet, however, you feel as Arsenal make a solid, if unspectacular, opening to their European season.
Atalanta, who played well, will rue Retegui's miss from twelve yards, as well as the brilliance of Raya in keeping out Retegui's subsequent follow-up header. They didn't overly work the Arsenal netminder otherwise as often they lacked the final pass to carve Arsenal apart. The midfield was impressive, though, de Roon ticking things over whilst Zaniolo and Cuadrado both caught the eye with lively cameos off the bench.
IT ENDS EVEN - A point and a clean sheet apiece for Atalanta and Arsenal after a tightly fought Champions League encounter in Italy. Arsenal shaded the first half as Havertz and Martinelli spurned presentable shooting efforts off target. Saka drew the only save out of Carnesecchi with a low free kick. In the second half, it was Arsenal's goalkeeper who produced some heroics; Most notably, a double save from Retegui in the fifty-first minute. Partey was adjudged to foul Retegui inside the box and the Atalanta man saw his spot-kick saved by Raya, diving to his left. Retegui looked certain to nod home the rebound from close range but his header was somehow kept out by a recovering, Raya who dived back across his line superbly to paw the ball away. After that, it was a substitute, Cuadrado, who looked the most likely goal source as he curled inches wide twice. Ultimately, though, it was an even contest throughout with a draw a fair reflection of that.
90+4'
Jorginho, just inside his own half, spreads it right to the feet of Saliba. He gallops across the halfway line, locating Trossard on the wing. Pasalic is in close pursuit but Trossard forces a throw-in off of the Atalanta substitute down the right, in the middle of Arsenal's attacking half.
90+2'
Cuadrado rolls it short, from the left quadrant, to Ederson. His left-footed ball into a packed penalty box is headed away by the towering Gabriel.
90+1'
Zaniolo doggedly battles away down the left. First, he shrugs off the presence of Havertz before bursting past White with an injection of speed. White, in fairness, recovers to poke out for a corner...
