That's it for this match. The Champions League continues tomorrow and Tribe will continue to bring you all the action. Until then, this is Sanil Karan signing off.
Sometimes, fortune favors the seemingly less deserving, as was evident when Emre Can’s pass from the edge of the box set up Bynoe-Gittens at a tight angle on the left. He took a shot that deflected off defenders and found the back of the net, surprising Brugge. Unsettled by the initial goal, Bynoe-Gittens then dazzled with a series of stepovers to beat two defenders and slotted a low shot into the bottom right corner, securing Dortmund's victory and marking the start of their ninth consecutive UCL campaign with a win. For Brugge, the defeat adds to their troubling record of losing six of their last ten home games against German teams. The loss was further compounded by a late penalty from Guirassy, awarded after Mechele fouled him, and converted into the roof of Mignolet’s net, adding a bitter end to a match where clinical finishing proved decisive.
Christos Tzolis was determined to make an immediate impact right after the break, coming close with a header that went just wide from a promising cross by Joaquin Seys. At the other end, Marcel Sabitzer's low shot from an indirect free-kick narrowly missed, adding to the mounting tension on a gripping night in north-west Belgium. Sahin made a double substitution, bringing on Serhou Guirassy in place of Malen. However, Brugge remained undeterred; a fast counter-attack saw Andreas Skov Olsen deliver a cross for Vetlesen, whose low shot required a full-stretch save from Kobel, despite the Norwegian’s imperfect connection.
Brugge faced a tough challenge against last season’s runners-up, Dortmund, and the difficulty nearly intensified early on. In the fourth minute, Donyell Malen had a chance at the far post but scuffed his shot just wide, and Karim Adeyemi soon tested Simon Mignolet from distance. Brugge almost capitalized on Malen’s miss when a chaotic corner clearance led to a close-range save by Gregor Kobel from Gustaf Nilsson and a shot by Hugo Vetlesen that hit the crossbar. Dortmund eventually regained control, with Adeyemi being denied by Mignolet and Maxim De Cuyper intercepting a dangerous pass across Dortmund’s backline.
