Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as Fulham’s superb second half helped them to complete a comeback win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park this afternoon: I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage: I’ve been Rory Morrow, and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - Focus shifts to the Cup competitions for both clubs. In the Carabao Cup semi-final, Newcastle hold a 2-0 lead over Arsenal, which they’ll look to build on in Wednesday night’s second leg here. That precedes a trip to League One, Birmingham City, in the FA Cup fourth round in next Saturday’s teatime game. Earlier that same afternoon, Fulham are also away at a League One side, facing 2013 winners, Wigan Athletic.
Fulham were fantastic after the break and whatever Marco Silva said to his players, it worked a treat. They transformed the attacking momentum into their favour and had threatened the equaliser before Jimenez took it well. Whilst Isak almost put them behind again (hitting the crossbar), Fulham didn't sit back and settle for a draw at 1-1: They wanted the three points and duly got them as two of Silva's substitutes, Pereira and Muniz, combined brilliantly at a free kick. Berge covered a lot of a ground in midfield, constantly winning possession back for Fulham and was a standout player from a team that really did repel Newcastle strongly in the second half.
A real game of two halves, to use a cliche, that for Newcastle, today. They were really on it for the first 45 minutes: Snapping into tackles, creating chances and nullifying Fulham's threat very effectively. But they paid the price for only being 1-0 up as Fulham turned the tables in the second half, penning Newcastle in and breaking the lock just past the hour mark. Joelinton looked leggy in midfield whilst the defending for both goals was poor. Gordon can consider himself very unlucky to be on the losing side today, with his speed and direct running a constant threat: But it's successive home defeats for The Magpies before their Carabao Cup second leg semi-final with Arsenal: Can they bounce back there?
FULHAM'S COMEBACK WIN DENTS NEWCASTLE'S TOP FOUR BID - A stirring second half of football from Fulham sees them come from behind at St James' Park to stun Newcastle United in the Premier League, this afternoon! Newcastle led when Murphy slotted in and, prior, to that, had gone close when Tonali rattled the crossbar. It was a much improved display from Fulham in the second half, though and they deservedly levelled through Jimenez. Then his replacement, Muniz, got on the end of a free kick and although Isak was unlucky to strike the crossbar when the score was 1-1, Fulham comfortably kept Newcastle at bay, in the closing stages: What a win for Marco Silva's side!
90+6'
Osula charges down the right side of the box, at pace, but blasts his cross too near to Leno, who falls on the ball, for Fulham.
90+5'
Isak comes out to the left touchline, where Willock gives the ball to him. Kelly goes on the overlap but Isak's pass to him is slightly too short, enabling Castagne to nip in and thrash the ball out of play for a Newcastle throw-in, on their left, in the middle of the attacking half.
90+2'
Leno deliberately dilly-dallies over taking the resultant goal-kick for Fulham. Tonali complains to the referee and Chris Kavanagh concurs, booking Leno for timewasting.
