The second leg is scheduled for Sunday evening at the Stade De France in Paris, where France will be hoping they can turn this tie on it's head. Make sure you join me again on Tribe for live coverage of that. It's been a pleasure bringing you all the action from this one at the Stadion Poljud in Split. For now, Harrison Ryburn signing out.
This was totally off-key from France in contrast. Even with the return of Kylian Mbappe for the first time in two international windows, they struggled to really get their attack going. In fairness, he did look lively throughout, and forced a number of good saves out of Livakovic in goal, but just couldn't find the back of the net to pull a crucial goal back in the tie. Dembele was also largely cut out of the game, whilst Kolo Muani was even quieter. They'll be dissapointed with some of their defsnive mistakes too, one of which led to the opening goal for Budimir, and they struggled when Croatia upped the intensity of their press in the first half. Despite bossing possession and territory through the second half, they couldn't find a way through Croatia's defence, and have been left empty-handed in Split. Didier Deschamps now has a lot of work to do ahead of the second leg in Paris.
Once they took the lead, Croatia sat deeper in a 4-4-2 and soaked up the pressure for much of the second half. Their backline was immense, with Gvardiol impressing on the left, and Caleta Car and Sutalo both guarding the penalty box well. As always, Kovacic and Modric played a big part with their experience in midfield, helping Croatia over the line with a clean sheet to their name. They head to Paris with a two-goal lead now, and a little bit of breathing space as they bid to further progress into the final four.
A momentous night for Croatia, particuarly after some of their recent struggles and the early exit at the group stages of the Euros last year. They played with authority and confidence, backed on by a large home crowd tonight, and did superbly to frustrate France at every turn. Key to securing the early advantage was the work of their high press, forcing errors from the French backline and turning over possession high up the park. Ante Budimir was also crucial in holding up play in-between Konate and Saliba, before linking up with the likes of Perisic and Baturina.
Full-time in Split and Croatia will head into the second leg with a two-goal lead in this Nations League quarter-final tie with France. Despite missing a penalty inside the first ten minutes, there was no stopping the hosts tonight, and two first half goals from Ante Budimir and Ivan Perisic proved enough for victory. It doubles as just Croatia's second win over France in 11 international fixtures, and they are in the box seat to progress from this tie.
90+3'
The corner off the left is cleared at the near post, before Mbappe whips a follow-up delivery towards the back. It falls for Kone to hit, but he slips under his own feet, and swipes his effort wildly into the stands. Almost comical from France in the end and that sums up their night.
90+2'
Modric loses the ball in midfield, and Mbappe takes off on a solo run down the left in transition. He opens up for a shot on his left foot near the edge of the box, but is quickly contained by multiple defenders, and the ball ricochets over the byline for a corner.
90+1'
Into four minutes of injury-time at the end of this one, and Croatia are moments away from just their second international win over France. Les Blues push forward again though, looking to pull back one late goal in the tie. Tchouameni can't pick out Olise down the right though, and Gvardiol gets in the way to intercept once more.
