Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as Rasmus Hojlund struck off the bench to give Denmark a deserved 1st Leg win over Portugal in the Nations League quarterfinals, tonight: I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage: I’ve been Rory Morrow, and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - The return, 2nd Leg, for both is on Sunday evening, where Portugal will look to maximise their home advantage.
Portugal were really underwhelming, this evening. Their play was passive and they sat back, inviting Danish pressure onto them. Costa, in goal, bailed them out on several occasions, including a sharp save to keep Eriksen's penalty out. When they went behind, and were forced to chase the game, Portugal struggled to create clear openings and were indeed more vulnerable, on the counter. Out wide, Neto and Leao both didn't distinguish themselves while, for a team with so much experience, there was a lack of leadership and resilience as the match's momentum slipped away from them, with Ronaldo on the periphery of proceedings for large spells. They have a lot of improvements to make, and a deficit to overturn, in the 2nd Leg.
That was a superb performance, and result, for Denmark who certainly maximised the home advantage with a confident, assured performance. They took the game to Portugal, who sat off and so much of what Denmark did was excellent: Isaksen was a menace in attack, Andersen was a rock at the back and Eriksen, erring from the spot asides, controlled the midfield with a fine passing range. Hojlund, who's confidence appears to be back after recent goals for club and country, shrugged off a poor miss moments earlier to clinically take his chance and Denmark have put themselves in a very good position as they bid to reach the Nations League semi-finals.
ADVANTAGE DENMARK AFTER THE 1ST LEG - Denmark will travel to Portugal for Sunday's 2nd Leg with the advantage in this Nations League quarterfinal tie! That's thoroughly deserved, as well: Denmark were the better team, tonight and should have been out of sight before the break with Eriksen missing a penalty and Costa in inspired form to keep the scores level. Yet, just as they looked to be running short on ideas, the substitutes combined as, within nine minutes of coming on, Skov Larsen set up Hojlund, who stroked home the winner. Portugal are going to have be a lot better on Sunday, to turn this around.
90+5'
Dias crosses from the right. Vestergaard's swiped clearance comes to Neto, outside the box. He curls towards goal but Schmeichel is behind it, all the way.
90+4'
Semedo slides in Silva, underlapping, down the right-side of the box. Dorgu lunges in and takes the ball, in the eyes of the referee, despite Silva's protestations.
90+3'
Dorgu does well to retain possession, down the left flank, calmly passing it inside to Norgaard, who fends off Neto and dribbles back towards the centre circle as Denmark hold onto the ball.
90+1'
CHANCE - Could be two! Kristensen makes inroads down the right wing and tees up Skov Olsen for a shot, from 12 yards out: The substitute, though, drags the ball wide of the right post!
