This was the final warm-up clash for the Waratahs who have come away with an emphatic win last weekend against NSW Pacifica and now a draw against the Brumbies, but the ACT outfit have another clash next weekend against the Western Force before the Super Rugby Pacific season kicks off in two weeks' time. They have some set piece niggles to work out in that clash before they take on the Fijian Drua in their opening match of the 2025 season!
Both sides had some messy kicking going on, with kicks going too long on a couple of occasions. But the Brumbies were also able to use their kicking to their advantage, with a couple of great chip kicks reclaimed to put them onto the front foot and down into the right areas of the pitch. For the most part, both sides were pretty solid under the high ball, even under pressure of the chase.
The Tahs had a strong scrum, putting huge pressure on the Brumbies and winning scrums even against the throw as the visitors either couldn't stay upright, went too far upright, or couldn't stay straight under the pressure. The lineouts from the Brumbies were a little better, scoring a try off a devastating rolling maul in the left corner after winning a penalty at the previous maul as the Tahs' only option to stop the roll was to collapse it. And the Brumbies' maul defence was just as dangerous, not only preventing the Tahs from being able to get the maul driving forward but at times actively driving it backwards, and managing a turnover as a result.
The Tahs looked a bit like they had the upper hand on the pitch for the most part, but the Brumbies really used their opportunities better, getting themselves quickly onto the front foot and down into the right areas of the field when they had ball in hand. It was some great little offloading and stunning stepping from the Brumbies that kept them in the game, forcing the Tahs onto scramble defence as they got themselves down into the red zone and -- often quite quickly -- over the line.
It was more of the same in the second half, trading tries again after the break before the Brumbies managed to hit the front again with 15 to play. The Tahs managed to hit back with a final say, but the missed conversion left the sides level with 5 minutes on the clock and the game had devolved somewhat by that point, level them drawn at the full time hooter.
What a match! It was a tight clash on the scoreboard for the entire 80 minutes, so perhaps fitting that it ends in a draw at the final whistle. It was the Brumbies who struck first on the scoreboard early on despite the dominance of the Tahs on the field in the opening minutes, but it didn't take long for the home side to hit back with a try of their own to level the scores and then another to hit the front. The Brumbies returned in kind, with another try apiece before the halftime break and just a missed conversion from the Brumbies the difference after the first half.
80+4'
The Brumbies barge straight back up the midfield, but a messy pass out to the right has been spilled forward. That's the game!
80+3'
Messy lineout is cleaned up by the Brumbies! Through the hands to the right wing where Debreczeni chips it ahead to chase, and it's Lonergan who comes flying up to secure it for the visitors! Through the hands to the left wing where they chip it ahead as the cover defence comes across, but the Tahs manage to gather this one inside their 22. Recycled back to Creighton who doesn't find touch!
80+2'
Quick openside ball is smashed to touch up around the 10. Looks like Berry still has time on his watch!
