Liverpool’s next challenge takes them to Aston Villa for a midweek clash, followed by a tough trip to reigning champions Manchester City next weekend. Meanwhile, Wolves will look to bounce back as they travel to high-flying Bournemouth in their upcoming fixture.
Wolves capitalized on their second big chance of the second half when Matheus Cunha brilliantly bent one into the top left corner in front of the Kop to halve the deficit. It was a poor second-half performance from Arne Slot’s side, who struggled to maintain control and never looked comfortable with their slim lead. Despite the nerves, Liverpool held on to secure a crucial three points that reinstated their seven-point lead in the title race, though it felt more like relief than celebration for the Reds.
Wolves had a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit when Marshall Munetsi broke clear on goal, but Alisson was quick off his line to deny him. The visitors were almost punished further when Alexander-Arnold’s pass found Salah, who slotted home, only for the offside flag to save Wolves from embarrassment. The game remained eventful for the officials, as controversy struck just before the hour mark when referee Simon Hooper initially awarded a penalty for a clumsy challenge by Agbadou on Jota, only for VAR to intervene, and after a review on the pitchside monitor, the decision was overturned.
Liverpool came out of the blocks quickly, but Diogo Jota saw his volleyed effort go narrowly wide after good work from Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Reds didn’t have to wait long for the breakthrough, however, as a misjudged Toti Gomes clearance fell kindly to Luis Diaz, who bundled the ball home with his midriff to give Liverpool the lead. Diaz continued to cause problems for Wolves, setting up Jota for a shot, but Emmanuel Agbadou pulled off a remarkable last-ditch block to deny the forward. Liverpool’s relentless pressure continued throughout the first half, and it seemed inevitable they would double their advantage, which they did just before halftime when Mo Salah converted a penalty after Jose Sa had fouled Diaz in the box. Wolves did manage to fashion a few opportunities, with Matheus Cunha coming close with a free-kick that just missed the target, but they were unable to find a way past Liverpool's solid defense.
90+6'
Cunha attempts a long, hopeful pass for Munetsi, but Liverpool manage to clear it without much trouble. Wolves regain possession on the right, but Lima fouls Endo, giving away a free-kick. That could very well be the final opportunity for Wolves as Liverpool look to close this one out.
90+4'
The corner from Wolves comes in from the right, but Liverpool manage to clear it away with relative ease. Bradley then steps in on the left to halt Bellegarde's progress, forcing the Wolves player to concede a goal kick to Liverpool. The hosts regain possession and look to steady things once again.
90+3'
Doyle steps up to take the free kick, but instead of crossing it into the box, he opts for a direct shot at goal. His effort is blocked by the wall, though, and the ball ricochets behind for a corner on the right. Wolves will look to make something of this set piece as they continue to pressure Liverpool.
90+2'
Cunha strides forward with purpose and looks set to break into the box, but Endo steps across and brings him down just outside the area. The referee has no hesitation in awarding a free kick in a dangerous position for Wolves. This is a crucial moment, with the opportunity for a potential goal or a dangerous delivery into the Liverpool box.
