Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as a dramatic FA Cup tie at Old Trafford ended with Fulham dramatically eliminating the holders, Manchester United, on penalties to book a place in the quarterfinals: I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage: I’ve been Rory Morrow, and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - United’s focus switches to the Europa League knockout rounds on Thursday night, as they travel to Real Sociedad for the first leg of their last 16 tie. That’s followed by a huge Premier League match against Arsenal, at Old Trafford, next Sunday afternoon. Fulham have until Saturday afternoon before they play again, facing Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.
Fulham can be very happy with that! Into the FA Cup's last eight, they'll feel they've got a great chance now to go deep in this competition as they, at last, get the better of United this season. It wasn't Fulham's best performance but they took their goal well, Bassey was excellent at both ends, and kept United on their toes throughout a tense Extra-Time. Each of the Fulham penalties were perfectly taken and Leno's heroics in goal ensure that it's Marco Silva's men who can celebrate at the end of a rollercoaster Cup game!
Manchester United did well to force Extra-Time and penalties after a pretty poor first 70 minutes, or so. Fernandes's equaliser quelled some of the home fans' frustrations with United's captain demonstrating great composure in how he took his goal. But United's concession, from a corner, was dreadfully cheap and they remained liable to Fulham's counterattacks, during Extra-Time. Youngsters, Obi-Martin and Heaven, were both great when they came on but the FA Cup exit means that, ultimately, it's a disappointing afternoon for The Red Devils.
FULHAM REACH THE FA CUP'S LAST EIGHT - After a marathon Cup tie, it's Fulham who are into the FA Cup's quarterfinals as Manchester United, the holders, are knocked out on penalties! After a cagey first half, Bassey headed Fulham ahead right on half-time. An insipid United drew level through a fantastic goal from Fernandes, to restore parity. Both teams went to try and win it in Extra-Time with both goalkeepers, Onana and Leno, having to make alert saves to keep their side level. Then, to penalties we went and after 3 faultless kicks each, Lindelof and Zirkzee both saw their spot-kicks saved by Leno as Fulham prevail in the shootout!
FULHAM ARE THROUGH AND THE HOLDERS ARE ELIMINATED - Zirkzee aims for the centre of the goal but sees Leno guess right again, diving low to his left to make the save and send Fulham into the FA Cup quarterfinals! Ecstasy for the Fulham players: Agony for Manchester United!
