The All Blacks 7s started their Olympic campaign in fine fashion with a six-try 40-12 win over Japan. The majority of the damage was done in the first half where Fine Fineanganofo scored a double and Ngarohi McGarvey-Black and Akuila Rokolisoa crossed for tries. With Rokolisoa at the top of his game, New Zealand pulled out to a 33-7 lead moments after the resumption but Japan hung in well. A late consolation try by Taiga Ishida was just reward for their efforts.

Collier spills possession near the touchline as Japan shift it wide to the left. Kippei Ishida threatens to burst into a gap and he rolls in a well-weighted grubber that sits up nicely in the in-goal. Taiga Ishida grounds it for a deserved consolation try for Japan.
