Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as Real Madrid won 2-1 at The Bernabeu, in a 1st Leg of stunning goals, to take a slender advantage into next week’s 2nd Leg with Atletico Madrid in a finely poised Last 16 Champions League tie: I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage: I’ve been Rory Morrow, and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - In between now and next Wednesday’s 2nd Leg, both teams return to La Liga action with Atletico away at Getafe on Sunday afternoon. Real host Rayo Vallecano later on, that same afternoon.
We will, of course, have live coverage of next week's 2nd Leg for you, right here on Tribe, next Wednesday night: It could be an absolute cracker, so be sure you join us for that!
Atletico, meanwhile, had a strong spell during the first half and were probably disappointed to be interrupted by the half-time whistle. They were on top, then and had their tails up after a simply sublime hit from Alvarez, to drag them back on terms. They also deserve credit for not wilting after Rodrygo's early opener, a mentality that ensures they remain very much in the tie, ahead of the 2nd Leg at The Metropolitano, next Wednesday night. De Paul covered a lot of ground in midfield, Gimenez was a rock in defence, making several tackles to keep Real Madrid out in the second half, but the substitutions didn't really make an impact. Atletico are in this Last 16 tie, for sure, after tonight but do have to claw back a deficit, against their fiercest rivals.
Real Madrid started and ended by far the stronger of the two teams, tonight. Their ferocious start was rewarded early on by a moment of inspirational genius from Rodrygo, who's strike was simply superb. Yet, they lost their way, unusually, through the first half as the momentum swung to Atletico, culminating in Alvarez's leveller. But Real Madrid reminded us all of just why they prosper in the Champions League knockout rounds with a dominant second half, capped by Diaz's goal, to ensure that they have the advantage at half-time in the tie. Valverde was excellent as well at right-back whilst Modric, who came off the bench, demonstrated his class as his arrival coincided with Real Madrid's calm, controlled second half showing.
ADVANTAGE REAL MADRID AFTER THE 1ST LEG - So, it's Real Madrid who take a slender, one-goal lead to Atletico Madrid next week as the holders run out 2-1 winners at The Bernabeu, this evening! An electric first half started with Rodrygo firing in a stunning, early opener for Real. Atletico grew into proceedings and levelled when Alvarez picked out the top right corner, brilliantly. Into the second half and Real regained control, retaking the lead when Diaz darted away to tuck in an accomplished strike. Real completely controlled the closing stages but yet couldn't get a third. That leaves this one on a knife-edge, ahead of the 2nd Leg: What a game that could be!
90+4'
Vinicius picks off a stray Le Normand pass to speed off down the left wing. Gimenez does superbly to put the ball out for a corner. It comes to nought as Gallagher heads away Modric's delivery, from the left.
90+3'
Mendy, inside his own half on the left touchline, passes in-field, to Rudiger. He goes wide to Vazquez, who strides up past the halfway line, with a strong run.
90+1'
CHANCE - Vazquez goes on a mazy dribble, through the attacking half. He lays it on ahead to Mbappe, down the right side of the box. His cutback finds Vinicius, who falls over, as he goes to try and shoot! The rebound comes out to Mbappe, again, and this time, he finds Modric, who fires straight at Oblak, from the penalty spot!
