That wraps things up here on Tribe, thanks for joining us. Things go from bad to worse for Manchester United, while Newcastle can't stop winning. We'll be back in two days with Brentford v Arsenal, the final game of this round and first league game of 2025. See you then!
Manchester United remain 14th after this defeat, just seven points above the relegation zone after Ipswich beat Chelsea. They trail Newcastle in 5th by 10 points at the halfway stage of the league season. It doesn't get any easier, with an away trip to Liverpool next up on Sunday. Newcastle are just three points behind Chelsea in 4th now as a result of their surprise defeat at Portman Road. They head to another struggling side in Tottenham on Saturday, looking to make it five straight league wins.
Eddie Howe no doubt warned his side they would face an improved Manchester United performance in the second half, and so it proved. They weathered the storm with relative ease though and come away with another richly deserved three points. Alexander Isak was always lively in attack again tonight and added another goal, his 11th in his last 11 games. The real highlights here though were the midfield three. Bruno Guimaraes in particular ran the game alongside Sandro Tonali and Joelinton. Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon were also dominant down the left wing up against Noussair Mazraoui. It's been a massive December for Newcastle, and they are well set now to push on and challenge for a top four place and trophy in 2025.
Ruben Amorim has plenty to ponder as the January transfer window prepares to swing open. His Manchester United side look bereft of confidence and in urgent need of reinforcements. So many players are struggling in all areas of the pitch, and Amorim has to take his share of the blame for failing to match Newcastle's three central midfielders from the outset. They were outclassed in the first third of the game, and never found a way back. It was an improved second half performance, but they couldn't find that crucial next goal and the game ran away from them. Harry Maguire's header off the post was the closest they came, while Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro will both feel they should have scored late in the first half. There are a few injuries and suspensions to consider, but this was a long way from what Manchester United fans expect from their side.
Newcastle United seal a fifth straight victory in all competitions to move up to 5th. First-half goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton were enough here, as Manchester United fall to a fifth defeat in six, and third consecutive loss at Old Trafford. That's the first time that's happened in the league since 1979.
90+2'
Bruno Guimaraes wins a throw near halfway for Newcastle and celebrates like he's scored a goal. Newcastle are almost there.
90+1'
Antony shows Lewis Hall a clean set of heels as he bursts away from him down the right touchline. He goes down claiming a foul but the referee doesn't believe it was and Hall gathers to clear.
THREE more minutes here as many Man Utd fans head for the exits.
