Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as goals from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Matheus Cunha earned Wolves a huge win over Aston Villa at Molinuex in the Premier League this evening: I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage: I’ve been Rory Morrow, and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - FA Cup fourth round ties for both come next Sunday. At lunchtime, Wolves travel to Ewood Park to take on Championship outfit, Blackburn Rovers. At teatime, Villa round off the day’s Cup games when they take on Tottenham Hotspur at home in an all-Premier-League clash.
Aston Villa's form for European hangovers continues: They've only won once this season when playing a Premier League game directly after a midweek Champions League match. They lacked rhythm in attack and Watkins, for the first half, wasn't in the game much at all. Rogers fared similarly, after his midweek hattrick, he didn't influence the match nearly as much tonight. But no Villa player shone, in fairness, and the defending for both goals was lacklustre, with Bellegarde battling harder to reach the ball for his strike and Villa's rearguard non-existent when Cunha went through late on. Lots for Unai Emery to ponder as their European chase, in the Premier League, takes another dent, with this defeat.
That was an excellent team performance from Wolves, all night long. They never let Villa get into their stride, at all and posed a constant threat in attack: Cunha knitting the attacks together with Sarabia, as he aptly demonstrated with his role in the first goal, adding some much-needed creativity to midfield. Bellegarde, as well as scoring, was a diminutive presence, tackling well and preventing Villa's creative players from getting into the game: It's a hard-earned three points, that could prove invaluable in Wolves' bid to avoid the drop!
WOLVES WIN TO MASSIVELY BOOST SURVIVAL HOPES - Their first win since December, in the Premier League and Wolves reignite their fight against relegation, holding off a below-par Aston Villa at Molinuex this evening! Wolves had the better of the first half: Scoring early through a blistering goal by Bellegarde with Cunha and Guedes both spurning opportunities to double the lead. For Villa, Unai Emery rang the changes, making four at half-time but their sluggishness and lack of cutting edge continued in the second half. Wolves then, deep into injury time, sealed the three points when Cunha raced through and unerringly finished: Huge celebrations at full-time as, following four successive league defeats, this is a much-needed victory for Vitor Pereira's side.

For removing his shirt during his celebration, Cunha gets a late booking, in the aftermath of scoring: I doubt that he'll mind too much!

CUNHA WRAPS UP WOLVES' WIN - Rogers, on the left of the attacking half, loses the ball as Bueno makes a fine, sliding tackle. Hwang takes over and, spotting the space ahead of him, rolls a super pass into Cunha, dashing down the middle of the attacking half. Konsa tries, in vain, to cut it out but the pass deflects off him instead: Cunha runs through, into the right side of the penalty box and slows down. There, Konsa gets removed from the equation by a dazzling turn from Cunha, creating the space for him to tuck a fantastic finish underneath Martinez, into the far bottom left corner!
