Next up for Bournemouth is a trip to London to face Tottenham next Sunday, as their hunt for European football continues. Meanwhile, Wolves will face a tough challenge in their relegation battle, with in-form Everton set to visit Molineux next weekend.
A VAR controversy in the first half, a stunning screamer in the second, and relentless Bournemouth pressure thwarted by brilliant Wolves defense set the stage for a dramatic penalty shootout, where Sinisterra finally sealed Bournemouth’s passage through. The FA Cup once again lived up to its reputation for thrilling drama.
As the game progressed into extra time, Bournemouth looked the more determined side, constantly probing for an opening, but they were met with a resilient Wolves defense, led by Toti Gomes, who seemed to be everywhere, clearing several dangerous balls off the line. Kluivert came close with a header that was expertly saved by Johnstone, and Cook had a chance late on but was denied by Johnstone's save. Wolves, on the other hand, were content to sit deep, inviting pressure from Bournemouth, with only Cunha threatening at times, but his efforts were either blocked or failed to trouble the goalkeeper. Despite the attacking intent of Bournemouth, Wolves remained solid and resolute, seemingly waiting for the penalty shootout to decide the fate of the match. Thier superstar, Cunha, wasn't going to be one of the takers, though, as he was sent off late after headbutting Kerkez. For Bournemouth it was good news as it was Sinisterra who stepped up to take the final penalty and he scored, sending Johnstone the wrong way and securing Bournemouth’s victory.
The match ended in dramatic fashion after a tense 120 minutes of play, with Bournemouth emerging victorious in a penalty shootout. The game had been an evenly contested affair, with both teams creating opportunities, but neither able to break the deadlock in open play. Evanilson’s first-half strike gave Wolves the lead, but it was quickly canceled out by Cunha’s stunning long-range strike on the hour mark. Both teams battled through extra time, with Bournemouth pushing forward more aggressively, but Wolves stood firm, content to sit back and hold on, hoping for a chance to strike. Despite several close calls and moments of tension, neither team could find a winner, and the match was finally decided by the penalty shootout.
Johnstone receives a yellow card for dissent after voicing his frustration over something following Sinisterra's penalty.
