With the Shield safely defended, Hawke's Bay will look ahead to their next challenge which comes on July 27th against Whanganui from McLean Park in Napier. Stay with Tribe for all the action of that one. This is Anthony Morgan signing off.
King Country toiled hard with ball in hand but lacked the quality to consistently penetrate the Hawke's Bay defence. Kaleb Foote carried strongly at No.8 and scored the Rams' only try with a barging effort in the 51st minute. Baven Brown provided some nice carries in the midfield while Patrick Hedley put in a few nice kicks throughout the contest.
Hunter Morrison was a standout for the Magpies at lock with several breakdown steals. Morrison got through a mountain of work with ball in hand as well with his deft offloads providing a couple of line break assists. Semi Vodosese brought plenty of impact from No.8 and was rewarded with a cracking individual try where he dummied his way through the defence early in the second half. Meni Manase and Kienan Higgins provided a few highlights in the backs, with the former's sharp footwork providing a cracking try assist for halfback Sam Wye.
Hawke's Bay retained the Ranfurly Shield with a nine-tries-to-one 57-7 win over King Country in atrocious conditions in Hastings. Leading 26-0 at halftime, the Magpies extended their lead almost immediately when No.8 Semi Vodosese threw a dummy and sliced through the gap on a powerful 35m run to score. Josh Gimblett went over out wide in the 45th minute after some nice interplay by Kianu Kereru-Symes and Kienan Higgins before sustained pressure inside the red zone saw Kaleb Foote barge over for King Country's first try in the 51st. Sam Wye crossed for Hawke's Bay's seventh try after some sharp footwork by Meni Manase before Hunter Morrison went over for a deserved try with 16 minutes to go. An error at the back by Patrick Hedley gifted Kere Penitito the Magpies' their final try in the 70th minute.
