I am truly stunned! Canterbury have wiped the floor with Tasman this afternoon. For now, this is Nicholas Friedlander, signing out.
Canterbury rolled back the years this afternoon. They have been known to be a threat at the business end of the competition for as long as it has existed, and they showed that again this afternoon. Their attack was slick, as Pohipi, McLeod and Ennor interchanged, to bamboozle a hopeless Tasman defensive line. Fihaki and Punivai finished well, and the game was done at the break. They kept the foot on the throat, with plenty of impact from the bench, posting a record score against Tasman. Next week they head away to play the Bay of Plenty, and they will be full of belief that they can get the job done again.
Tasman will be gutted. Ten days ago, and they had just defended the shield against Auckland, and were tracking to be the number one seed heading into the playoffs. Fast forward to now, they've lost the shield, and have just been embarrassed at home to see their season ended in the quarter finals. Injuries certainly caught up with them, but that performance was still not befitting of what they are capable of. They made error after error, and were guilty of continually chasing the game. Johnny Lee was the best in the losing effort, making some decent carries, as well as mustering up on defence, with the Mako making 197 of them. That is a tough way for their season to an end.
That is what you call a good old-fashioned hiding. Big brother has taken little brother, and has chewed him up, and spat him right back out, capping off a shocking week for the Mako. They would have hoped to bounce back from the shield disappointment, but they didn't, and they served up the worst performance in their history. Canterbury on the other hand were every bit as good as the Mako were bad, running in nine tries in a stunning display. They will be tough to beat in these finals...

Hutchinson bangs it over from in front to put the exclamation mark on a fantastic performance!

Nothing comes, so it goes back to the penalty, and with nothing left to play for, they will have a shot!

Harmon gathers and goes to the drive, before Canterbury peeled away into midfield where Crotty slipped through one as he pumped the legs. Now they have an advantage too...

Tasman settle it off the lineout, before clearing through W Havili. He finds touch 20m from the line.
