Japan really struggled in the set piece as England's power caused them major issues in the scrums. The Brave Blossoms did win a scrum penalty in the second half which sparked major celebrations for the undersized pack. Ultimately they were heavily outclassed but they never threw in the towel and they had their moments out wide. Dylan Riley made a decisive break to set up Naoto Saito in the first half while Kazuki Himeno finished a well-taken team try after a series of offloads midway through the second half.
Ollie Sleightholme was a standout for England on the left wing with several threatening runs and a well taken try from a grubber late in the first half. Ollie Lawrence had the Japan defence on high alert in the midfield with his ability to offload creating plenty of havoc. Up front, Maro Itoje was a reliable target in the lineouts while George Martin roamed well in the loose.
England piled on nine tries to two as they cruised past Japan 59-14 at Twickenham. Leading 35-7 at halftime, England weathered an early second half storm by Japan before they extended their lead through George Furbank, who was the beneficiary of a cracking Tommy Freeman offload in the 54th minute. A Luke Cowan-Dickie brace took the hosts past the half century either side of a well-taken try by Kazuki Himeno for Japan. Harry Randall put in a brilliant cross-field kick for Tom Roebuck to score his first test try with 11 minutes remaining.
