Ireland will be disappointed with the defeat after they showed great resilience to lead at halftime despite having minimal possession. Once New Zealand got on a roll they were powerless to stop them as their lineout completely broke down in the second half. Ben O'Connor was a standout with several strong runs from fullback, including a line break that set up Jack Murphy for a 12-0 lead after the half hour mark.

The Baby Blacks' bench provided huge impact with the likes of Jeremiah Avei-Collins and Sika Pole playing key roles in the second half. Rico Simpson's injection in the 45th minute was pivotal as the playmaker provided a number of classy touches to help his side pull away to a comfortable win. Of the starters, Vernon Bason impressed with a try in each half while Matt Lowe was heavily involved before he left the field with an injury. Xavi Taele and Aki Tuivailala showed how potent they can be in the midfield with several powerhouse runs.

New Zealand produced a powerful second half showing to beat Ireland 24-38 in the playoff for third place at DHL Stadium. Trailing 12-5 at halftime, the Baby Blacks suffered a setback early in the second half when Frank Vaenuku was sin-binned for a dangerous cleanout on Stephen Smyth. Down a man, New Zealand lifted and leveled the scores soon after when Aki Tuivailala broke through to set up Xavi Taele. Vernon Bason burst away to put the Baby Blacks in front after 47 minutes before a tackle busting effort by Jeremiah Avei-Collins gave them breathing space with 23 minutes to go. A double to Vaenuku settled the result before Ireland finished with pride with late tries to Ethan Graham and Sean Naughton.

NEW ZEALAND CLAIM THIRD! Gavin takes a run outside his 22m as Ireland work through a few phases. Murphy pops in a chip kick that is claimed by O'Donovan who slides in to take it. He pops a pass back to Simpson who boots it into touch to bring the match to an end.

IRELAND GO IN AGAIN! Ireland work it up to halfway before Gavin makes a clean break through the middle of the defence. He sprints inside the 22m before he pops a nice over the top pass to Naughton who wills his way over to score just to the right of the posts.

Ireland are awarded a relieving penalty on their 22m after the Baby Blacks are pinged for cleaning out the halfback. Murphy finds touch 6m short of halfway.

GRAHAM SCORES A CONSOLATION TRY! Yarr takes it up to the 5m before Edogbo is contained close to the line. Ireland recycle quickly as Naughton fires a nice cutout ball to Graham who dives over to score in the right corner.

Ireland shift it left to Flynn who makes a clean 20m break over halfway. New Zealand are penalised at the breakdown where Avei-Collins is pinged another 10m for back chat.

New Zealand then send it through some slick hands to the left where a long pass by Simpson is deflected backwards off an Irish hand. Vaenuku streams through and scoops up the ball as he dives over to score to the left of the posts.

New Zealand hammer it forward through six phases up towards the Ireland 22m. Avei-Collins and Smith work it 15m out before Cribb takes a carry.
