With this victory, Canada keeps their hopes alive for the WXV 1 title as they prepare for a crucial clash against England next week. Ireland, despite showing resilience in the second half, will be aiming to regroup ahead of their upcoming match against the USA in the next round. For now, that rounds things out in this one. Thanks for tuning into Tribe's coverage of WXV 1.
Canada’s Claire Gallagher and Alex Tessier were standouts, with Gallagher's poise and playmaking key to their victory. Tessier, sharp in midfield, was crucial in both attack and defence. Meanwhile, Canada's forward pack, led by Gabby Senft, stood strong against Ireland’s determined second-half surge, ensuring they held onto their lead.
Canada's intensity noticeably dropped in the second half as Ireland dictated the pace and tested their defensive line time and again. Ireland struggled to convert their dominance into enough points, though, with several promising attacks falling short. The strong efforts from flankers Erin King and Aoife Wafer were impressive, and Ireland's play was bolstered by Enya Breen’s leadership in the midfield. But it was too little, too late, as Canada had done enough in the first half to secure the win.
Ireland came out firing in the second half, determined to claw their way back into the contest. In the 46th minute, after sustained pressure and smart play from their forwards, O'Brien's pinpoint cross-field kick found Eimear Considine, who dotted down in the corner to reduce the deficit. Ireland continued to dominate territory and possession, controlling large portions of the half, but Canada’s defence held firm, limiting the Irish to just the one try.
Canada secure a 13-point victory over Ireland in a hard-fought match, crusing to victory in the end after leading by 18 points at half time. The first half was dominated by Canada, who capitalised on two Irish yellow cards, including a penalty try awarded after Niamh O'Dowd illegally collapsed a driving maul. Canada then added two more tries through Claire Gallagher and Julia Omokhuale, building a comfortable lead. Despite a brief reprieve from Dannah O'Brien's penalty goal for Ireland, Canada finished the half with a commanding advantage.
80+1'
Ireland carry outside their 22 through O'Dowd and Jones. Slow ball for Hogan to pick and go. Wide right it goes but Flood is sent over the sideline and that is full time.
80'
Ireland work it into Canadian territory, with Dalton attacking down the left before Apps cuts her in half. Carrying next is Hogan, stopped 37m out and stripped of the ball by Royer. Schell then slams a long kick into the 22 of Ireland, cleaned up by Murphy-Crowe.
79'
Canada spin it left where Gallagher sends the kick in behind. It's cleaned up at the back by Flood and she counters back to halfway. Canada are then penalised for a high shot. Fowley misses touch and Schell sends her kick back to halfway.
78'
Unsteadiness at scrum time and the referee resets it. The second attempt is good as Canada win possession...
