France will be bitterly disappointed to let this one slip which has left them in a precarious position as they look to defend their title. With a bonus point win over Spain in their first match and another bonus point for a close defeat here, Les Bleuets remain in a good position but will need to handily in their final match. The sin-binning of Leo Carbonneau for a high tackle in the 58th minute was a crucial moment as New Zealand surged onto attack and hit the lead for the first time minutes later. While they rallied well to put themselves in a winning position and despite the best efforts of standout flanker Joe Quere Karaba, France couldn't quite hold on in the end.
New Zealand were bossed in the scrums in the first half but in the second they were completely dominant as France struggled to stop their momentum. The Baby Blacks' maul started to wreak havoc before they made a big statement with a rollicking 15m drive for Manumaua Letiu's try in the 68th minute. Liam Jack and Andrew Smith were standouts at the breakdown but Smith was guilty of overstepping the mark with his cleanouts on a couple of occasions. Stanley Solomon had the French defence on high alert on the left edge while in the midfield Xavi Taele carried strongly all afternoon.
WHAT A FINISH! In a real 'game of two halves' New Zealand have bounced back from an 11-0 halftime deficit to stun France with a 26-27 win on the buzzer. Rico Simpson held his nerve from wide out to land a crucial penalty that puts the Baby Blacks right on track for a return to the semi finals. Aki Tuivailala's try in the 45th minute gave the Baby Blacks belief after they were kept scoreless in the first half before France restored their advantage with an intercept try to Joe Quere Karaba. New Zealand dug in for the fight and hit back almost immediately when Dylan Pledger sniped through to set up Stanley Solomon. A huge eight-man shove saw New Zealand win a tighthead before Pledger snuck over in the corner to put his side in front with 17 minutes to go. From there, the lead would change hands four more times as Hugo Reus landed a penalty to make it 21-19 to France. Manumaua Letiu was the beneficiary of a powerful maul in the 68th minute before a runaway try to Mathis Ferte looked to have secured the win for France until Simpson's clutch late strike.
