Italy will be hugely disappointed with this result considering how even a contest it looked like it could be at one point, but they simply weren't able to convert opportunity into points and struggled on scramble defence when Los Pumas were quick with ball in hand. They have another two hugely physical clashes coming up in the next two weeks as they take on Georgia and New Zealand. Argentina head across to Dublin now to take on a wounded Irish outfit before finishing up back on the continent against France.
Argentina for the most part had the upper hand at scrum time, putting huge pressure on Italy in the set piece and winning a couple of penalties. But the Azzurri managed to get one of their own back in the second half with a huge shove that yielded a penalty for the home side. Both sides utilised their lineouts to set some great rolling mauls, with Italy's first try coming off the base of a collapsed maul right on the line as Carley ran it in under the sticks. Los Pumas also benefitted from their drives with tries, with Sclavi crashing over early in the second half off the base of the maul.
For Italy there will be plenty of ruing of opportunities. The stats are fairly evenly split in terms of possession, but Italy actually had the territorial advantage here. They were absolutely brutal on defence, making some monster tackles that forced Argentina backwards with ball in hand at crucial moments that prevented them from being able to build much momentum, and a couple of times also managing to force loose ball that the Azzurri were able to pounce on.
Both sides were keen to play a quick, expansive game, and that certainly contributed to the handling error count here. But it also resulted in some stunning breaks. Argentina obviously capitalised on that strategy much more than Italy, making huge metres up the wings thanks to some great offloading and cheeky stepping. It didn't always work out for Los Pumas either, but considering the scoreline they'll be less bothered by that.
Los Pumas ran in seven tries in total today, five of those coming in the second half as they really hit their stride. Italy only managed two all game. Both sides struggled with their handling, coughing up some valuable opportunities through knock ons. Italy will be particularly frustrated with that considering the scoreline, because there were a few excellent opportunities there for them to get points on the board.
This was looking shortly after the break like it was going to be a good contest, but that early second half surge from Italy turned out to be more bark than bite, with just a single penalty from that dominance. Instead they were subjected to a spate of tries from Los Pumas, taking the game well out of their reach before they scored their final try through Nicotera with just over 10 minutes to play. And even that wasn't all she wrote, with the visitors adding another two to their own tally before the final whistle.

Lineout set up just over halfway. Short ball to the front for Italy, but the maul is going nowhere. Infield through the hands, and Garbisi with a bit of a dart himself off the base of the ruck. Wide now to the right wing where Lynagh tries the chip and chase, but that's landed in touch! Game over!

Lineout set up on Italy's 10 as the clock ticks dead. Quick ball infield through the hands, and then back to the shortside on the left wing. No space up there. Back infield to Mallia who drags Menoncello with him for a couple of metres. Italy get themselves over the breakdown there to force turnover ball! They have the advantage as well. Wide to the right wing, and bundled into touch. Back for the penalty.

Deep restart onto Argentina who drive up out of the 22 before spreading it infield. Good offload there for Garbisi who flicks it back to the left. Mallia stopped short as he tries to go up the wing, and Italy pinged on the floor as Menoncello is literally horizontal but trying to steal the ball...
