It's five losses on the trot for England now, and they will be really fired up to close out their year with a win when they come up against Japan next weekend in their final match of the Autumn Nations Series. South Africa will be pleased to have two on the bounce in the November internationals as they close out their year next weekend against a struggled Welsh side.
The lineout issues didn't end there for the Boks either. While for the most part they secured the ball and made nuisances of themselves on England ball they also tossed far more balls straight over the top into English hands, costing them opportunities to get onto the front foot and build pressure on the home side. Their maul got a couple of good drives on it, but they would have needed to secure far more of their own ball to really make it effective in putting England under the pump.
South Africa will be disappointed in their discipline today. They coughed up penalty after penalty at lineout time in the second half, ultimately being shown a yellow card to Steenekamp for the fourth lineout penalty in a row. Not that England's discipline was anything to write home about either, with 13 penalties total to the Roses while the Boks found themselves on the wrong side of the whistle 14 times in the 80 minutes.
There was a huge kicking contest here, with both sides looking to put pressure on the back three through the high ball. It was generally handled well, with both teams chasing well and reclaiming some of their own kicks or putting in big tackles if they couldn't secure the high ball. There were a couple of knocks and tangles in the air as well, but for the most part it was a good contest to watch as it opened things up on attack.
England had so many opportunities though, and will be kicking themselves for not converting those into points. They had long periods of time in that second half where they had ball in hand down in South Africa's 22, with the visitors coughing up penalty after penalty, and they still couldn't put points on the board. They kept sending one-off runners into South Africa's midst and having the ball turned over, or kept trying the exact same play with each penalty as they set lineout after lineout and maul after maul that the Boks weren't letting go anywhere.
The Boks were brutally physical. Their scrums were huge, winning a couple of penalties at the set piece as England simply couldn't stay upright against the shove. The Roses managed to get one crucial one back late in the spell with the Boks on attack inside England's 22, but for the most part they found themselves under pressure at scrum time. And South Africa were equally dangerous in the contact zones and at ruck time, forcing turnover ball a couple of times as they get over breakdowns and drove through England's rucks.
It's definitely not pretty, but South Africa are two from two in their Autumn Nations Series. There will be plenty they will be unhappy about from this clash, but the final score will not be one of them! England started off strong early on, getting over the line through Sleightholme with less than 3 minutes on the clock. South Africa managed to hit back with three tries in the space of 11 minutes to surge to the lead. England hit back with another try before the break, but went into halftime 2 points down. It was a tough second half with a try apiece chalked off and the only try that stuck going the way of the Boks as they took the game out of reach.
80+1'
Lineout set up halfway between the 10 and the 22. Straight over the top, but scooped up on the bounce by England. They pop it infield for a phase before the shift back shortside, and that's been snaffled on the floor again by the visitors! Smashed across the field into touch for the final whistle!
80'
Snyman brings the ball down into the maul, but it's quickly off the back from Marx who carries up into contact. Isolated on the floor! England have the penalty.
