The Boks will be delighted with the year they have had. Just two losses from their 13 matches in 2024, one against Ireland and another against Los Pumas on Argentinian soil. They will go home from an unbeaten November tour for the first time in 11 years as well, and will feel they can put their feet up over the Christmas break! For Wales there are a lot of questions that need answering, one of the main ones being whether or not Warren Gatland will stay on as head coach after this disastrous year. Wales will be back in action in February as they kick off the Six Nations against France, while the Boks will pick up again in July 2025 for their incoming tour.
Despite yet another big loss, you can't fault the heart with which Wales played this game. They were down 21 points at the break and came out firing in the first 10 minutes of the second half, catching the Springboks a bit off guard as they strung together phase after phase of hard, running rugby at the visitors. They weren't able to get any points from that sustained period of pressure, but it also prevented the Boks from getting onto the board in the first 15 minutes of the second half. And with the game well and truly lost in the dying minutes the home side again threw phase after phase -- and the kitchen sink -- at South Africa to close the game out with a final try.
South Africa were keen on playing an expansive game again today, with the likes of Arendse, Kolbe, and Fassi getting plenty of time with ball in hand as they looked for space out wide. Hendrikse was on top of the crossfield kicks as well to try and catch the Welsh defence napping on the wings, although they didn't all go to plan for the young flyhalf. The offloading and stepping game of the back three were excellent though, drawing in defence and opening gaps up around them for teammates to run it.
South Africa were brutal on defence, putting in some huge tackles that forced Wales back behind the gainline, getting over Welsh ball at the breakdown to force turnovers and penalties, and slowing down the ball when Wales were able to keep possession through some big counter rucks. It resulted in Wales often not really able to make ground even when they did have ball, and ended up kicking it away in frustration more than they probably would have wanted to.
Once again it wasn't a clean performance from the Springboks, but even so they ran in 7 tries and kept Wales to just 2 down their end, heaping pressure on the Welsh side particularly up front. South Africa were massive at scrum time, winning penalty after penalty as the home side simply couldn't stack up. The lineouts were a little better than last week, but they also found themselves having to defend some big mauls from the Welsh side in the set piece.
South Africa will finish off their year with an unbeaten Autumn Nations Series tour, their first since 2013, but it's only compounded more misery on this Welsh side who have now gone an entire calendar year without a win for the first time since 1937 with their longest ever losing streak at 12 tests in a row.

Into the right corner for the lineout, but there's a contest in the air this time! Wales have managed to secure it on the floor despite it looking stolen in the air. Morgan with a pick and drive, and this is Wales's play from here! Thomas with a strong carry gets within two metres, but Morgan is smashed backwards on his drive... Botham drives low and hard and forces his way onto the chalk!
