Scotland close out their Autumn Nations Series next week against a resurgent Wallabies side, and will be eager to end their year on a high after a great win today!
Both sides were massively physical on defence, with Os Lobos driven backwards over and over again when they had ball in hand. What saved them was some ill discipline from the Scots that allowed them to set up lineouts down in the right areas of the pitch, with Portugal only able to strike from a short distance out. By contrast, Scotland showed just how dangerous they could be in broken play. Yes, their forwards were struggling to get over the gainline in the midfield, but their backline was slick with their handling and cheeky on the steps to create gaps in the defence through which they could dart from within their own half of the field.
Portugal were stunning at set piece time, scoring two of their tries off the back of rolling mauls from lineouts and the third off a stolen Scottish lineout inside the home side's 22. They picked off a couple of Scotland's balls in the lineout, putting huge pressure on Scotland as they were quick to get onto the front foot after a steal. Their scrums were also excellent, winning a couple of penalties as the Scots couldn't stack up in the pack.
It certainly wasn't a clean game from Scotland, with a couple of excellent opportunities going begging thanks to some poor handling and forward passes at times. They also found themselves under a bit of pressure when they tried to play the hard phase game, making most of their inroads once they spread the ball wide through the hands to the wingers who were absolutely excellent this afternoon at getting around the outside of the defence.
A huge performance from Portugal today, well out-scoring their highest ever points haul in a single match against any of the UK teams, but it was far from enough. Scotland come away with a comprehensive win here, scoring 9 tries in 80 minutes. The home side were able to score from anywhere on the park, making some excellent breaks thanks to some great handling and stepping spreading that Os Lobos defence too thin to keep up.

Back to the left wing where the offload from Baptista is spilled forward right on the 80-minute mark! That will be game over!

Bento is under the goal-line drop-out and drives back up into contact up the left wing. Recycled infield and spread quickly out to the right wing where some quick passes sends Storti up into contact. Campos sends it back infield to Appleton who flicks it along for Lima to carry up. Out wide to the left wing, but no space up that channel. Back to the midfield, and Scotland are driving them backwards now!
Can't see an angle where the ball is clearly grounded on the turf in all those angles... TMO agrees! No try!

Down at the front again, but there for Portugal. Baptista bursts away blindside! He absolutely smashes into the Graham who is there on defence, and ends up placing the ball down on Graham's boot! Onfield decision is no try, but we are going to confirm this with the TMO...
