Both sides were massively physical on defence, with Os Lobos driven backwards over and over again when they had ball in hand. What saved them was some ill discipline from the Scots that allowed them to set up lineouts down in the right areas of the pitch, with Portugal only able to strike from a short distance out. By contrast, Scotland showed just how dangerous they could be in broken play. Yes, their forwards were struggling to get over the gainline in the midfield, but their backline was slick with their handling and cheeky on the steps to create gaps in the defence through which they could dart from within their own half of the field.
