For the second week in a row the Springboks come away with the full complement of points in Australia, keeping the Wallabies winless after the second round of the competition. The Boks move to the top of the table for now, but there's still four rounds of action left! There's two weeks off now before round three, and that sees South Africa back on home soil against arch rivals New Zealand in Johannesburg, while the Wallabies head to Argentina to take on Los Pumas in La Plata.
The Wallabies also tried to play the wide game, sending quite a few crossfield kicks to the wings. Most of them didn't yield any results, with the closest they came to getting any points off it being when Jorgensen burst away after claiming the kick. More of that from the Wallabies and better support running will serve them well going forward.
While South Africa weren't able to use their scrum in the second half to get onto the front foot, their rolling mauls were absolutely massive. The Wallabies had no legal way of halting them once they got it rolling, with the end result being a yellow card as they had to be penalised multiple times for side entries and collapsing the drive in desperate attempts to stop the Boks from getting over the line.
South Africa had a rather experimental side starting for them today, and they were certainly quite creative in their attack. Plenty of crossfield kicking and chips over the top to chase, and while it didn't always land in the right hands it also served to put the Wallabies under pressure trying to take a very wet ball with the Boks chasers bearing down on them.
The Boks had quite a few wasted opportunities again, with some good scramble defence from the Wallabies preventing them from getting over the line through some excellent cover tackles. Australia's defensive effort the last two weeks has been stunning, but with a relentless effort on attack from the Boks it's been tough for them to hold South Africa out completely.
It was a tight game in the first half, but the Boks ran away with it in the second half as Australia ran out of steam. They put three tries on the board in the second 40 while the Wallabies were only able to add a single penalty to their tally after the break. It was messy all around for 80 minutes thanks to the torrential rain, with neither side really able to control the ball for particularly lengthy periods, but there was no dominance in the pack after the break with the Wallabies running out of props and the scrums having to go uncontested early in the second 40.
80+1'
Quick ball off the scrum to the left wing for Koroibete who bursts up over halfway and the 10 before flicking it back on his inside. The Wallabies with a couple of slow phases here on the left wing, and then coughed up into touch by Koroibete just seconds after the clock ticks dead.
79'
Openside ball and a flick pass out the back to Kriel to Williams to Fassi who bursts up the left touchline to the Wallabies 10! Back infield and coughed up by the Boks this time.
78'
Lineout set up just short of the Boks 10. Loosely tapped off the top for Pollard who spreads it infield, but Australia spill it again as they try to set up the carry!
