Harry Godfrey was excellent at fly-half, directing play with precision, while Danny Toala had a strong game in the midfield. Josh Gimblett was impressive in the loose forwards, as was Joel Hinz up front for the Magpies. For Whanganui, it just wasn't their day, coming up against a quality side defending the shield with determination and skill at McLean Park. Despite their best efforts, Whanganui couldn't match Hawke's Bay's pace and power, leaving the Magpies to celebrate a comprehensive victory.
The second half saw more of the same from Hawke's Bay, with Toala scoring his second try in the 55th minute after some back and forth action to begin the second 40 minutes. Whanganui managed to get on the scoreboard through Kamipeli Latu's try in the 61st minute, but it was merely a consolation. Hawke's Bay's Kere Penitito added two tries in quick succession, scoring in the 65th and 71st minutes. Whanganui's Josefa Namosimalua received a yellow card in the 69th minute for intentionally slapping down a pass, further hindering their efforts. Meni Manase scored another try for the Magpies in the 74th minute, and Sam Wye completed the rout with a try in the 79th minute.
Hawke's Bay secure a decisive 75-point victory over Whanganui in their Ranfurly Shield defence, showcasing their dominance throughout the entirety of the match. Danny Toala opened the scoring in the 3rd minute after a strong charge, setting the tone for a relentless first half. Joel Hintz followed with a try in the 10th minute, while Freedom Vaha'akolo crossed the line in the 17th minute in his debut match for the Magpies. Ben O'Donnell, also making his debut, added another try in the 23rd minute, and Tim Farrell continued the onslaught with a try in the 26th minute. Mat Protheroe capped off the first half with two impressive tries in the 39th and 40th minutes, giving Hawke's Bay a commanding 45-point lead at half-time.
