With time winding down, Montgomery stepped up in the clutch moments, first slotting a penalty goal in the 54th minute to level the scores at 18-18. Then, in the final minute, controversy struck when Montgomery was taken out while attempting a field goal. After a successful captain’s challenge, the Indigenous All Stars were awarded a penalty directly in front, and Montgomery coolly slotted the match-winning goal to seal a dramatic victory.
The second half saw the Indigenous All Stars fight back as they wrestled momentum away from their opponents. Montgomery made an instant impact off the bench, setting up Ella Koster with a perfectly timed floating pass for a try in the 36th minute. As the game tightened up, both sides had opportunities but were met with solid defence. The Māori All Stars looked to extend their slim lead but were unable to convert their attacking chances into points, keeping the contest on a knife’s edge.
The first half was a back-and-forth contest, with both teams showing their attacking prowess. The Indigenous All Stars struck early through Monique Donovan in the third minute, finishing off a pinpoint chip from Kirra Dibb. Jaime Chapman extended the lead shortly after, slicing through the defence in the 10th minute. However, the Māori All Stars responded strongly, with Chante Temara darting over from dummy half before Laikha Clarke bulldozed her way over in the 26th minute. Just before the break, Lilly-Ann White showed her skill with a superb finish, giving the Māori All Stars a 6-point advantage at half-time.
The Indigenous All Stars have claimed a thrilling 2-point victory over the Māori All Stars at CommBank Stadium in Sydney, securing the win in the dying moments through the clutch boot of Lailani Montgomery. In a game filled with momentum swings, the Indigenous side overcame a 6-point half-time deficit to edge out their rivals in a tense finish. Indigenous All Stars play the ball 10m from the try line in centre field. Chester plays it, with the ball sent left for Kemp to carry, stopped 5m out. Chester is next to have a go, before Montgomery snaps a field goal, but it's a grass-burner, going nowhere near the sticks after being charged. It's called a knock on by Montgomery as she went to regather the ball, and the Indigenous All Stars challenge the call. The replay shows Quinlan makes contact with Montgomery's leg after the kick, and Quinlan concedes a penalty right in front of the sticks! Montgomery will take the two.
