Portugal open their UEFA Nations League campaign with a win over Croatia, helped by Ronaldo's 900th goal for club and country. Make sure you join us again on Tribe for more Nations League action tomorrow, with Italy's visit to France being the feature game. It's been a pleasure bringing you all the action from Estadio da Luz in Lisbon this evening. For now, Harrison Ryburn signing out.
Portugal remain in Lisbon for their next Nations League clash on Sunday, when Scotland make the trip south. They'll be heavy favorites to pick up another three points from that affair, whilst Croatia return home for a visit from Poland in Osjiek on the same day, who also ran out 3-2 winners over Scotland in Glasgow elsewhere tonight.
A defeat to start Croatia's Nations League campaign, following on from their poor European Championship group stage exit. They were caught out early on, and took their time to settle into the contest, slowly adapting to the pace of the game and keeping hold of more possession as either half wore on. Zlatko Dalic's side created chances too, and were perhaps unlucky not to level it up late on, with Perisic and Matanovic sending opportunities wide. Portugal's intent to dictate meant they they were largely restricted to attacking on the counter with Kramaric acting as target man up front, but when they did get ahold of the ball, they were patient and measured with their build-up. The central low block of their opponents forced them wide, but they still created chances from long range and with deliveries into the box. It's not the result Croatia would've wanted, but they weren't to far off the pace tonight, and will be expected to bounce back if they maintain the same level in their other Nations League games.
Three points to open Portugal's UEFA Nations League campaign as they attempt to repeat their title-winning heroics of 2019 this time around. Roberto Martinez's were dominant to start either half, and tried to dictate the pace and the tempo of the game with the majority of the possession during those periods. They built out from the back and were patient in possession, playing through Croatia's midfield block to score twice during the opening 35 minutes. The Selecao almost let that lead slip though, and were guilty of taking their foot off the gas at the end of either half, coming under immense pressure and relying on some poor Croatian finishing to get over the line. They sat off and dropped deep when their opponents got ahold of the ball, and did well to force their opponents wide, but were perhaps guilty of struggling to take full control of the aerial zone in the penalty box on occasion. With an opening win in the bag, Portugal will be favorites to make it two from two when they get a visit from Scotland next up.
Fulltime in Lisbon and Portugal have held on to open their UEFA Nations League campaign with a victory over Croatia. It was a dominant first 35 minutes that got them home, with Diego Dalot opening the scoring inside seven minutes, before Cristiano Ronaldo added his 900th goal for club and country. Croatia pegged one back just before the break when Dalot put the ball in the back of his own net, but despite creating a couple of other good chances, couldn't level the contest back up. It's a perfect return to winning ways after their quarter-final exit at the Euros, and Portugal maintain their unbeaten competitive record against Croatia.
90+4'
CHANCE! Croatia continue to push, and Sucic cuts onto his left foot and lifts a delivery into the box. Matanovic throws his head at it again, but he can't direct his effort on goal and it flies over the top.
90+3'
The Lisbon crowd lift their noise as Croatia try to mount one more final attack. Sucic picks up the ball on the right again, before cutting inside and switching it across for Kovacic on the left. The latter lays it off for Sosa, who's delivery into the middle is cleared.
90+1'
CHANCE! The corner off the right is cleared, but it comes back out for Sucic on the right wing, who gets in-behind and lifts a delivery to the back post. It falls perfectly for Perisic in front of goal, but he strikes his right-footed volley into the side-netting from close range and Portugal breathe a sigh of relief. That was Croatia's chance.
