France now need to score at least three goals against Italy on Matchday 6 and win by two goals to secure top spot in the group. Meanwhile, Israel will be pleased to have ended their points drought, giving them a positive note to build on ahead of the start of their World Cup qualifying campaign.
Israel had the first opportunity of the second half with Liel Abada’s tame shot, but France dominated possession, although, struggling to create clear-cut chances. When they did test the goalkeeper, Daniel Peretz was outstanding, first denying Eduardo Camavinga and then making a stunning save to thwart Warren Zaire-Emery from close range. Despite several substitutions by Didier Deschamps to add fresh energy, France couldn’t break through, with Peretz again proving the hero, saving Christopher Nkunku’s injury-time effort to ensure the match ended goalless.
France only needed a draw to secure their place in the last eight, but three points were still crucial as they faced an Israel team that had lost all four of their previous matches in this Nations League campaign. Despite the absence of Kylian Mbappe, who was controversially left out by Didier Deschamps, France looked to Bradley Barcola and Michael Olise to lead the attack. However, the first half at the Stade de France saw France dominate possession without creating clear chances, with Randal Kolo Muani’s header the closest effort, saved by Daniel Peretz. The half also featured missed opportunities, with Raz Shlomo failing to tap in a simple chance for Israel, while Barcola missed a similar opportunity for France after a scramble in the box.
90+6'
SAVE! Coman is released down the left and delivers a precise cutback into the box, finding Nkunku. He aims for the bottom right corner, but the angle isn't there, and despite his best efforts, Peretz reacts brilliantly to push the shot away with a fantastic save.
90+5'
A France corner off the right comes to nothing as the delivery is cleared away. On the counter, David works tirelessly to win a free kick off Kounde, giving Israel a much-needed moment to breathe.
90+4'
CHANCE! Coman dribbles expertly and holds the ball inside the left of the box before lifting a delicate chipped cross. Thuram meets it perfectly with his head, but unfortunately, he directs it straight at Peretz, who makes a comfortable save. That could have been the chance for France, but once again, the breakthrough eludes them.
90+3'
Kolo Muani drives forward with purpose, but Jaber cynically takes him out, and it’s surprising to see the referee not issue a yellow card. France quickly lose possession as Hernandez gives the ball away on the left, allowing Israel to slow the game down and kill more time. The visitors continue to frustrate France's efforts as they run down the clock.
90+1'
Hernandez wins a corner on the left for France, and they opt to play it short. The ball is eventually worked back into the box, but Peretz is alert and claims it comfortably. Despite the pressure, Israel manage to deal with the set piece.
