Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as a late own goal from Girona goalkeeper, Gazzaniga, gave PSG a dramatic three points to commence their Champions League campaign. I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage; I’ve been Rory Morrow and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - PSG travel to Reims in Ligue 1 on Saturday night. Girona are also back in that league action on Saturday, away at Valencia, in La Liga earlier on.
Girona, debuting in the Champions League, showed why they are at this level tonight. A really solid performance across the pitch, they defended excellently and attacked efficiently. Romeu helped stem the tide in midfield with several vital interceptions while the forward players, led by captain Stuani, very much helped out their defenders. Stuani went closest to scoring for them with a plunging header and despite leaving Paris pointless, they can certainly take hope from this first Champions League experience.
Whilst PSG deserve credit for finding a way to win, that was a largely lacklustre performance. Their more patient first-half approach didn't exert Gazzaniga at all and PSG looked far more likely to score with an aggressive press after the break. Had they made better decisions in the final third, they may well have won this match earlier. Zaire-Emery patrolled the midfield impressively whilst the arrival of substitute, Lee Yang-In significantly lifted the attacking pressure towards the end. Although the goal was fortunate, it was a consequence of PSG's sustained attacks and desire to find a winner, that they ultimately did so.
PSG STEAL IT AT THE DEATH - Late drama to kick off the Champions League! PSG leave it late but eventually find a way past a fantastic Girona side, who'll be gutted to end up with nothing after their debut appearance in Europe's top club competition. Zaire-Emery went closest in the first half before the hosts upped the pressure in the second half. Stuani, though, forced the first meaningful save of the match when Sofanov kept his header out. Girona then survived some scares as an incredible last-ditch Krejci challenge prevented Dembele shooting with the Frenchman hitting the crossbar moments later. Substitute, Kolo Muani, spurned some late opportunities but ultimately, Gazzaniga's late goal has given PSG the winning start they craved to this competition.
