The Young Football Ferns have been eliminated from the U-17 Women's World Cup with a heavy defeat to Ecuador. Make sure you join us again on Tribe for more live coverage of the tournament as it progresses. It's been a pleasure bringing you this one from Santiago de los Caballeros. For now, Harrison Ryburn signing out.
A big moment for Ecuador in contrast, who have progressed through to the quarter-finals on tournament debut. Thay aren't a nation who are renowed for women's football, but this group has signalled the rise of a new group of players who could be a threat on the international stage in years to come. They simply took advantage of New Zealand's mistakes for the most part, and were lethal and accurate enough to expose the opposition defence, before taking their chances with some lethal finishing up top. They also came with the intent of shooting on sight at every opportunity, and mustered a whopping 34 attempts at goal, compared to New Zealand's five, keeping the pressure on throughout. A quarter-final showdown with defending champions Spain now awaits.
A rather miserable campaign for the Young Football Ferns, who exit the tournament with their tail between their legs. They came out and tried to commit numbers forward with the hope of playing aggressive football. It completelty backfired though, leaving too much space at the back and through the middle of the park for Ecuador to get forward. They failed to close down their opponents in the final third too, and were made to pay for some pretty passive defending throughout. With heavy defeats to Nigeria and today's opponents, alongside a rather dissapointing draw against the Dominican Republic, it will probably go down as one of New Zealand's worst campaigns, and a big learning curve for the squad going forward into more age-group tournaments.
Fulltime in Santiago de los Caballeros and the Young Football Ferns have been thumped by four goals against Ecuador, sealing their elimination from the tournament at the group stage. Caprice Chiuchiolo was the star of the show, setting up one and scoring one in the space of two minutes just before the break, before scoring Ecuador's third minutes into the second half. Dariana Moran settled the rout with ten minutes to play, adding a fourth goal off the bench. The result means New Zealand finish bottom of the group, whilst Ecuador join Nigeria in the semi-finals.
90+6'
Seconds left on the clock, and New Zealand win a free kick just inside their own half after a push on Loxton. It's sent long downfield, but it doesn't find a teammate and Ecuador head away once more.
90+4'
Camacho comes forward down the right flank this time, before looking up and powering a low delivery into the middle. It's intercepted by Dunn though, and New Zealand get it away from their box.
90+3'
SAVE! Arboleda pushes forward down the left flank this time, before cutting inside towards the top of the box and unleashing another powerful right-footed effort towards the top of the net. Neary meets it with a tremendous save though, and the keeper gets up to tip over the crossbar.
90+2'
Into seven minutes of injury-time at the end of this one, and New Zealand are headed for an early exit yet again. It comes wide for Young on the right flank here though, who cuts inside and lifts a delivery to the back post. Again it leaves a lot to be desired, and Rodriguez collects.
