Portugal have gone into their shell a little bit in recent games. They started the tournament strongly with wins against Czechia and Turkey to guarantee a first-placed finish in their group. Since then though the Portuguese have lost their finishing touch, unable to score in their final group game against Georgia nor in the Round of 16 against Slovenia. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa was the hero saving three successive penalties to allow Portugal to scratch through on penalties. They will expect a different game tonight where they will probably see less of the ball. That means they will need to be much more clinical in front of goal as their chances may be few and far between. 

OVER! Mendes cuts in from the left and drives forward. He then sweeps the ball out wide to Conceicao. His touch takes him just inside the box near the top right corner of the box. He whips a hopeful shot on goal but sends it high and wide of the goal. 

Ronaldo holds the ball up with his back to goal and does well to win the free kick from Upamecano. Portugal take this free kick around halfway and now look to build their own attack. Pepe sweeps the ball out wide to Conceicao. His pass in field is blocked by Barcola. 

WIDE! Dembele has made an impact since coming on. Dembele cuts in from the right and gets some space on his left foot. He whips a shot. looking for the top left corner. It's not a million miles away but doesn't come back enough to threaten Costa's goal. 

WIDE! Close for France! Camavinga cuts in from the left and rolls a pass to Kolo Muani. He turns and moves it on for Dembele. The substitute brings the ball forward and takes on his man getting to the byline. His cross deflects back to Camavinga kindly at the edge of the six yard box. He swivels and drives a shot towards the far bottom left corner of the goal. It's a great chance but Camavinga drags it wide! 

Tchouameni clips a hopeful ball forward into the centre of the Portuguese box. Kounde had made a run forward but Costa is commanding to catch it above the French right back. 

THAT WAS THE MOMENT! Portugal hit France on the counter, feeding Silva in acres of space down the right. He cuts back onto his left foot and France get bodies back in the way. He plays a pass back to Mendes who sweeps a shot at goal from the edge of the area. He can only hit it softly straight at Maignan. 

SAVE! That will be the last chance of normal time! Kounde rolls the ball out wide to Dembele. He cuts into the box onto his left foot before rolling it back to Mbappe. He sets himself on his right foot before unleashing a shot on goal. Again, it's too close to the goalkeeper and Costa easily catches it. That could have been Mbappe's moment. 

Leao runs at Kounde and opts to cross with his right foot from the left on this occasion. Again the quality is lacking as he loops his cross well over his support. Mbappe is back on the pitch as well. 

OVER! France lift the corner in from the right and it's over everyone in the middle. Mbappe picks it up on the left side outside the box. He cuts in on his right foot and whips a shot well over the goal. 

WIDE! Leao darts away from Kounde and gets his cross away from the byline. It's controlled by Silva who is surrounded by bodies. He keeps it alive though by moving it out wide for Palhinha to pick up. Portugal recycle it back into midfield and it opens up for Fernandes from 25 yards away. He's invited to shoot and he blasts a right-footed effort away. The ball deflects off the back of Saliba and wide of Maignan's left post. 

Vitinha whips the corner in from the right. Again, the delivery is not quite right and Kante can head clear at the near post under little pressure. 

Griezmann slips near the edge of Portugal box and Vitinha capitalises on it. He charges forward and breaks over the halfway line. But just as he entered French territory, Camavinga got across to dispossess the Portuguese. 

It's very tense in Hamburg. Most of that half saw Portugal with the ball at their feet enjoying comfortable possession. France didn't want to risk going out of shape and pressing their opposition too much. Portugal created a couple of half opportunities but couldn't test Maignan in goal. This game seems destined for penalties unless there is just one moment of brilliance in the next 15 minutes that separates these two sides. 

This is a sore one for Mbappe, who of course has already suffered that broken nose. The ball was headed into his face and he will receive some treatment. 

Nothing given and not really appealed for by Mendes in all fairness. He broke into space down the left flank and into the box. He touches the ball away from Upamecano and flings himself to the ground. There didn't appear to be any contact from the defender and it'll just be a goal kick. 

INTO THE WALL! Ronaldo stands over the ball alone. He smashes his shot towards the goalkeeper's side. But, the wall does its job as the ball crashes into it. 

KANTE AGAIN! Space opened up for him towards the edge of the box. He opens his right foot up and from just outside the box, he looks to curl a shot on target. Again, it's a tame effort that is straight at Costa. Not much longer now - will there be a hero in regular time? 

This is tight. It's been a half of few chances and so far stalwart defending. Both sides have enjoyed periods where they have dominated and seen more of the ball. With this, they have used width and delivered a number of crosses into the area with limited success. Hernandez was the only player able to force a save from a goalkeeper with his long-range effort stinging the gloves of Costa. It's clear that there is a lot on the line and neither side wants to make a costly mistake. Will one of them be brave enough to find that potentially match-winning moment of quality? 

Cancelo makes a good sliding challenge to win the ball from Hernandez. But, he passes the ball in field dangerously giving it straight back to France. Kante tries to flick it to Griezmann but he can't bring it down. 

FRANCE ARE THROUGH TO THE SEMI-FINALS! It couldn't have been much closer than that! No goals in normal time, no goals in extra time, and just one missed penalty. Joao Felix swept the ball onto the post and that is all that has separated these two teams. It feels so harsh for them to be going home in this manner but that is the nature of knockout football. 

SAVE! Kante starts off the French counter attack, bringing them up over the halfway line. He finds Dembele to his left. The winger then knocks it back to Kante, who lines up a shot from outside the box. He strikes it at goal but doesn't catch it well and it bounces into the grasp of Costa. 

Thuram turns neatly down the left wing and is then fouled by Conceicao. Kante takes it quickly and gets the ball moving along the French backline. 

Conceicao flicks the ball in field but overhits his pass. Saliba will cooly play it back to Maignan and France play it out from the back excellently working it up to Dembele on the right wing. Mendes is across to him and his tackle comes off Dembele and out for a Portugal throw. 

Portugal get the final 15 minutes of this match underway. Both sides go to their bench at the break. The big news is that Mbappe has taken a seat. He will play no further part, perhaps feeling the effects of his facial injury. He'll be replaced by Barcola up front. Portugal's change also comes in attack. Leao, who hasn't threaten as much in extra time, will be replaced by Felix. 

SHOT! Great run by Barcola as he weaves in and out down the left side, getting between Semedo and Conceicao. But, the angle is tight as he got into a shooting position and he skews his shot wide of the near post. Still we wait for a moment of real quality. 

BLASTED IN! There's no saving that! Kounde smashes his penalty into the top left corner of the goal. Again, Costa dived the right way but he can't reach anywhere near it. 

TEAM NEWS: France - Didier Deschamps makes two changes from the starting eleven that defeated Belgium in the previous round. Rabiot is suspended after accumulation of yellow cards so Camavinga takes his place in midfield. He also tinkers with his attack, rewarding Kolo Muani after a bright cameo as a substitute, with a start. Thuram drops to the bench. This should see Mbappe lead the line through the centre still sporting the mask after he broke his nose in France's opening match. 

DEMBELE TUCKS IT HOME! He rolls the ball into the right side of the goal, sending Costa the wrong way. It's not the most convincing but gives France the early lead. 

Fernandes looks to release Ronaldo early with a lobbed pass through the middle. Saliba's defending is excellent as he uses his body to get between Ronaldo and the ball. 

Vitinha clips the ball out wide to Ronaldo. He plays Leao down the left but Upamecano is across to him to knock it out for a throw. Ronald takes the throw-in quickly and receives the ball back. His pass in field is touched behind for a corner by Camavinga. Ronaldo signals to his side and the crowd to lift. 

Martinez makes a straight swap in midfield. Understandably he withdraws Palhinha, who is on a yellow card, and Neves will take his place. 

And still we will play! Neither side has been able to find a way through and so we're set for a further 30 minutes in Hamburg. The quality just hasn't shone through yet on the pitch and it has remained cagey and nervy for the entire 90 minutes. There were a few more openings in the second half. Kolo Muani and Camavinga had a couple great chances for France while Vitinha had Portugal's best sight of goal. But, neither goalkeeper has been beaten yet. Portugal have been here before after playing extra time against Slovenia in the round of 16. Their bodies will surely start to feel it as they are pushed to the limit again. Penalties of course also loom should there be no winner. 

France cannot see any movement ahead of them. This means Tchouameni opts to have a go from distance but it is certainly not his best. He slices his effort out towards the corner flag. 

OVER! Both Fernandes and Ronaldo stand over the ball. This time it's Fernandes who takes it and he whips it over the wall. But, he also sends it harmlessly over Maignan's crossbar. The next one might be Ronaldo's. 

Mbappe and Hernandez play a one-two on France's left. The left back is strongly muscled off the ball and this sets Portugal away. Vitinha moves the ball out wide to Leao. he lines up a cross but it flicks off Upamecano's head and out for a throw on Portugal's right. 

SAVE! Griezmann latches onto a poor Palhinha touch and win the ball for France high up the pitch. He plays it into midfield and Camavinga in turn moves the ball on for Hernandez. He sets himself for a shot and strikes the ball from 25 yards out. It's a fierce effort but too close to the middle and Costa palms it away. Kante can't quite get onto the rebound in the box as well. 

SIDE NETTING! Neves moves the ball out wide to Conceicao who runs at Hernandez. He whips a dangerous cross up towards the back post. Felix attacked it with great pace but the angle was tight for him. So, he can only direct his header straight into the side netting. He may have been better off heading it back across goal. 

SHOT! Mbappe has the ball near the top left corner of the box and gives the ball to Kante just inside the area. He lays it back to Mbappe who can take a quick snap shot with very little back lift from the edge of the box. Mbappe gets decent power on it but it's straight at Costa. 

Portugal are patient on the ball with Palhinha getting a lot of touches. They then burst forward rolling the ball out to Cancelo on the right. 

Kante plays his pass out to Mbappe on the left. He uses his trademark burst of pace to get to the byline and rolls a cross into the middle. Costa has to dive out and push the ball away in the six yard box. 

Dembele whips in a dangerous, looping cross. Upamecano heads it down into the middle. Ronaldo is there to head away and is fouled in the process. 

Mbappe drives forward into the left side of the Portuguese box. He can't find a way through though and is dispossessed. 

Portugal are enjoying a lot of the ball inside the French half without much penetration as of yet. The two centre backs are getting a lot of touches.  

Silva knocks the ball down the right for the run of Conceicao about to get into the box. The Portuguese man looks like he'll get in behind the French defence but Saliba flings his arm across the face of the Portuguese substitute. It's a cynical challenge which receives a booking and Conceicao will need some treatment. The free kick is near the top right corner of the box, around 20 yards from goal. This one is Cristiano Ronaldo's. 

CHANCE! It's brilliant work by Silva to drive down the right side of the box and wriggle his way down the byline. He pokes a pass back into the middle, finding Ronaldo. it's just a little bit behind him and Ronaldo had to get his foot back to try and hook it on goal. He can only flick it high and wide of the goal. 

A final change in midfield for Portugal. Nunes will come on in the centre of the park for Vitinha, perhaps with a view to taking a penalty. 

Portugal turn the ball over from France and Fernandes immediately launches the ball long with a diagonal pass. He was looking for Leao down the left but Upamecano cuts this one out. 

Kante has time to line up a cross from the top right corner of the box. He chips the cross in but it's a poor final ball again. Costa is off his line and palms it down before holding onto it. 

Portugal are forced to be patient on the ball, not seeing a lot of opportunities to play forward ahead of them. They move the ball side to side around halfway. 

Hello and welcome to Tribe for live coverage of the second of four Euro 2024 quarter-finals. I'm Danny Johnston and I'll be bringing you all the action from Volksparkstadion in Hamburg as two European heavyweights clash in a repeat of the 2016 final with Portugal taking on France. 

Pepe launches the ball long from the back towards Leao. Upamecano does well to stick with his man and allow the ball to run out for a throw. Not a lot of goalmouth action yet in Hamburg. 

The prize for the winner of tonight's match is a place in the semi-final in Munich against Spain, who have defeated hosts Germany after extra time. There's intriguing matchups all over the pitch. The midfield battle will be particularly intriguing to see who can cement control early in this encounter. Many have all billed this as the matchup between the two talisman, Ronaldo and Mbappe. One former Real Madrid legend and perhaps a future one. Neither have fired yet in this tournament but now would be the perfect time to set it alight. 

Leao knocks the ball forward for the run of Fernandes. Saliba was tight at the back of the Manchester United man and brings him to the ground. This gives Portugal a wide free kick on their left. 

Portugal have been here before in the last round. Costa was the hero saving all three of the penalties he faced. The penalties will take place in front of the Portugal fans and the news of this is received with a huge roar from the Portuguese fans. France will take the first penalty. Here we go. 

France get this quarter-final underway! Kante brings them forward early knocking it down the line for Kolo Muani. He turns it back into midfield allowing Griezmann to clip a pass out wide to Hernandez. France continue to play the ball around patiently on their left. 

Griezmann turns and finds the feet of Mbappe neat the edge of the box. It's worked around France's right before Camavinga lifts a ball towards the left side of the box. He puts too much on this and sends it straight out of play. 

Camavinga finds the feet of Mbappe near the edge of the box. He plays it across to Kolo Muani near the centre. The French forward puts a move on Pepe to try open up room on his right foot to shoot. But, the veteran defender does excellently to get his body in the way and win the ball from Kolo Muani. 

WIDE! Mbappe lays his pass across to Thuram just at the edge of the box. First time, he sweeps the ball with his left foot. He doesn't get this one right and sends it well wide of the left post. 

Kante knocks the ball to Camavinga near the right edge of the box. He neatly works it inside to Griezmann inside the box. He controls the pass but is quickly shut down before he can get a shot away. 

Fernandes finds the run of Silva down the right side of the box. He stands a cross up into the middle but can't beat Saliba at the near post. 

Fernandes tries to turn away from Tchouameni around the halfway line. The French midfielder does well to slide in and win the ball. But, Ronaldo drops back to help Fernandes out and get a foot in to win it back for Portugal. 

France get this match back underway! They have gone to their bench at the start of extra time as well. Camavinga got through a lot of defensive work and so Deschamps brings on Fofana to inject fresh legs into the middle of the park. 

France manage to force Portugal to play back to Costa in goal. Still Portugal hold onto possession but are now a bit deeper, closer to their own box. 

BLOCK! Portugal move the ball from side to side. France haven't had a touch for the last couple of minutes. Conceicao knocks the ball out wide to Semedo. He cuts back onto his left foot and lifts a cross into the box. It's initially cleared by France but not fully dealt with. Silva heads it across to Leao in the centre who volleys on target. Upamecano was in a good position and lunged across to make a vital block. 

STROKED HOME! Barcola sends the goalkeeper the wrong way and whips his penalty into the left side of the goal. He may have been in a bit of trouble had Costa guessed right but it's now firmly advantage France. 

Hernandez stands strong to block the path of Semedo and knock the ball out for a Portuguese throw. Portugal continue to probe down the right with Vitinha clipping a ball forward. But, Hernandez is there again to head forward for Les Bleus. Fofana thinks he's nicked in to win the ball and break forward but he handled the ball and the free kick goes Portugal's way. 

BLOCK! Dembele makes a great run over the halfway line weaving away from a couple of challenges. He then rolls it to Mbappe on the left side of the box rather than shooting. Mbappe cuts onto his right foot and then smashes a shot on goal. But, Pepe slide in front of him to make an important block. 

BLOCK! Camavinga has a bit of space and has a go from distance. It canons straight into a Portuguese defender and breaks the way of Ronaldo. 

Vitinha darts forward into the box and cuts his pass back. This is cut out but deflects back into the path of Portugal. Vitinha gets back onto the ball and is tripped by a back-tracking Kolo Muani. This gives a free-kick in shooting range, left of centre, 25 yards from goal. Ronaldo had a lot of chances like this against Slovenia in the last round. Will it be him again today? 

BIG TACKLE! Thuram shows great power and pace to see off the initial challenge of Pepe and run around the veteran defender down the right side of the box. He dribbles down the byline but Pepe got back to lung in and make a crucial tackle. 

BRILLIANT GOALKEEPING! Again, the joy comes through Leao down Portugal's left. He cuts a pass into the middle, finding the run of Vitinha. He opens his body up to place a shot on goal first time from 10 yards out. But, he can only put it straight at Maignan who was across to get his body behind it. It's then a bit scrappy on the rebound and the ball bounces to Ronaldo near the goal. He tries to back heel the ball on target but Maignan was out to smother the ball. 

There's a mistake by Maignan as he miscontrols Kounde's back pass. This sees the ball go behind for a bonus Portugal corner. 

CLOSE! France launch the ball forward from the back, looking for the run of Mbappe. Dias tracked back well and headed the ball upwards before Pepe could head further away. France bring it down though and find Hernandez on the left side of the box. From the byline he rolls a dangerous cross across the face of goal. But, it's beyond Kolo Muani at the back post. 

DOWN THE MIDDLE! Fofana places the ball just on the floor down the middle. Costa dived to his right and out the way of the ball. 

France make a straight swap up front. Kolo Muani, who had a golden opportunity to score the opener, will be replaced by Thuram, who did start in the Round of 16. 

Palhinha comes across to slide in and win the ball from Mbappe. He gets the ball and didn't appear to be too reckless. But, the referee goes to his pocket and brandishes the first yellow card of this match. Palhinha is rather unfortunate to receive this but it will mean that he'll miss the semi-final should Portugal advance. 

Mendes has some space to cross. It's a tame delivery though as he rolls it softly along the ground. France clear forward but it's back to Pepe and at the feet of the Portuguese. 

WE'RE GOING TO PENALTIES! This match ends goalless as France and Portugal cannot be separated after 120 minutes. The pressure is well and truly on both these sides as their fates will be decided by spot-kicks. Just a note that Giroud was set to come on for France to take part in the penalty shootout but there was no opportunity for him to come on. 

Portugal only have one win in their last 13 matches against France. However, this was in the most important one when they narrowly defeated them 1-0 in the final of Euro 2016. This is a matchup, much like the first quarter-final, that wouldn't have looked out of place as a final itself. We are set for a blockbuster clash in Hamburg. 

Neves clips a ball down the line, looking for the run of Semedo. He puts too much on it and the ball skips off the surface and out of play for a goal kick. 

France know that they will have to be better than this to challenge an in-form Spain side in the semi-finals. They are still yet to score a goal themselves from open play. That won't bother Deschamps too much right now though as they have booked themselves a semi-final match against Spain in Munich. Leao darts forward and gets to the byline. He has to stretch to hook a ball back into the box and this is intercepted by the French defence. 

Griezmann gets the ball through for Kounde on the overlap down the right. He scuffs his low cross into the middle a bit and it's tamely into the centre. This is easily dealt with by Portugal. 

Kante's pass is loose and given straight to Conceicao. He looks to weave in field and Hernandez gets a foot in. His tackle deflects behind for a Portuguese corner. 

Griezmann finds Kounde wide on the right. He whips a cross from here and it's flicked away by Portugal. Mbappe will pick it up on the far left side. The pace in the attack becomes a bit slow again though. 

Vitinha lifts the ball out wide to Cancelo. This match has resumed much as it ended in the first half, at a pretty slow pace. Silva crosses into the middle but it's too high and easily chested back by Hernandez to Maignan. 

Leao has probably been the brightest spark on the pitch in attack. He has got the beating of Kounde on a couple of occasions just hasn't been able to link up with his final pass. France, in attack, have been a bit laboured, and need to find a way to move the ball quicker to break down Portugal. Their defence has been strong again with Saliba a standout at the back so far. 

Mendes finds Leao down the left. Again he manages to get to the byline and get a cross into the middle. He had less space to get it away this time and it's into the arms of Maignan right by his goal. 

Griezmann clips the free kick in towards the near post. It's over Kante's head and headed away by Portugal. 

Tchouameni finds Hernandez wide on the left. He then moves it down the line for Mbappe. Cancelo is across to quickly get close to him. He plays it off the Frenchman and wins a goal kick for his country. 

Palhinha launches the ball out wide to Leao. He takes on Kounde and gets the beating of the defender, getting to the byline. His pass back towards the penalty spot is cut out and put behind for a corner. 

Cancelo knocks the ball down the right side of the box for Silva. From the byline, he lifts a cross into the middle but it's over the head of Leao. 

Kounde finds Kante down the right. He can't get around Pepe who defends it excellently. The ball breaks out to Kounde but Pepe blocks his cross as well. France keep the ball and Griezmann feeds it into Kolo Muani inside the box. He looks to lay a pass into the centre but his pass is nowhere near a French teammate. 

Another chance for France as the ball falls for Mbappe on the right side of the box. He drills an effort on goal but Mendes was there to block. The ball then loops up for Costa to catch. 

Fernandes's corner is whipped in towards the near post from the right. The whistle goes though has the free kick is given to France as Ronaldo pushed Hernandez.
