Final Shootout Score: 3 - 5
France know that they will have to be better than this to challenge an in-form Spain side in the semi-finals. They are still yet to score a goal themselves from open play. That won't bother Deschamps too much right now though as they have booked themselves a semi-final match against Spain in Munich. That's all from me though for this Euro 2024 quarter-final between Portugal and France. I've been Danny Johnston, thanks for following along live on Tribe.
It was a tense, cagey affair in which neither side showed their true quality. Chances were few and far between but they were there for either side to win it over 120 minutes. In the end though, the penalty shootout had to split Portugal and France. It's a complete contrast in emotions as France and their fans are absolutely jubilant and relieved. Portugal are heartbroken, with a special mention to Pepe and Cristiano Ronaldo who bow out of their final Euros after many, many special performances by the both of them.
FRANCE ARE THROUGH TO THE SEMI-FINALS! It couldn't have been much closer than that! No goals in normal time, no goals in extra time, and just one missed penalty. Joao Felix swept the ball onto the post and that is all that has separated these two teams. It feels so harsh for them to be going home in this manner but that is the nature of knockout football.
THEO HERNANDEZ WINS IT FOR FRANCE! He sweeps the ball into the left side of the goal. Costa went the wrong way and that will be it!

THAT IS SOME PENALTY! Mendes has to score and score he does. He smashes his penalty into the top right corner of the goal, and the ball crashes into the roof of the net. Maignan had no chance.

STROKED HOME! Barcola sends the goalkeeper the wrong way and whips his penalty into the left side of the goal. He may have been in a bit of trouble had Costa guessed right but it's now firmly advantage France.
