That rounds things off from Dortmund. Germany join Switzerland in the last 8! This is Nicholas Friedlander signing off.
Denmark bow out in the first knockout round, again signalling the end of this generation of Danish players. Despite plenty of endeavour through the middle of the game, they were eventually shown up for a lack of pace, something that can come with age. Christian Eriksen tried hard and created the odd chance, whilst Rasmus Hojlund was busy, getting several shots on goal. They ultimately couldn't find the guilt-edge chance though, and in truth they can have few complaints.
It wasn't perfect, but Germany have done plenty enough to keep their tournament hopes alive. In front of their fans, they started both halves really well, and though the goals didn't come in the first, they did in the second. Kai Havertz was a mixed bag up front, creating several chances for both himself and teammates, though he could only find a goal via the penalty spot. It was by no means vintage from the rest of the attack either, so expect changes again for the quarter finals. Defensively, they were rock solid, as Schlotterbeck made the most of his opportunity in place of the suspended Tah. They will play either Spain or Georgia in the quarter final.
GERMANY ADVANCE TO THE QUARTER-FINALS! The home side were just too slick, and have shown why they are shaping as the favourite to take this tournament out. They were by no means perfect, in a bit of a bizarre match that had a 25 minute rain delay in the first half, but they were plenty good enough. A Havertz penalty put them ahead, before Musiala settled it with 20 minutes to go, as they took advantage of Denmark's slow backline. On another day, Denmark might have made more of a game of it, having a goal scrubbed out at 0-0 after Thomas Delaney was a toenail offside, but that is how the law works! An early(ish) exit for the side who were beaten semi-finalists in 2021.
90+5'
Denmark come forwards after a German short corner, looking to find a goal. They couldn't though, as Kristiansen's cross deflected up to give Neuer an easy take.
90+4'
EXCELLENT STOP! Wirtz was found on the counter, being allowed to just carry over halfway. He played down the left channel to Havertz, who carried into the box. He looked to find the far corner, but a toe from Schmeichel tips it around the post.
90+3'
Denmark lump it forward and earn a corner, with Eriksen swinging it into front post. It was headed away though, falling for Wirtz who played wide to Henrichs. He looked to play the return ball, but a good recovery tackle just cut it out.
90+1'
WIRTZ THOUGHT HE HAD THE THIRD! Neuer just thumped it forward, with Fullkrug doing well to lay it further on for Wirtz. He carried into the box, settling it, before calming lifting it up and over Neuer. The flag was raised against Wirtz, who was miles offside in the build-up, but they are checking to see whether he was actually offside when he received the ball. Eventually they come to the conclusion that he was offside.
