As for Switzerland, after that brilliant win over Italy to reach the quarter-finals, they proved themselves as more than a match for England, growing into the contest as it went. Whilst England hogged possession, Switzerland weren't at all easy to open up as a sturdy defence was only breached by a stunning Saka effort. They'll be annoyed to have given up their lead after only five minutes, Embolo's finish reward for his persistence all game. The arrival of Shaqiri off the bench in Extra-Time sparked some really bright attacks but, similarly to England, they lacked a ruthless finishing touch to make those moments count. Akanji's miss in the shootout proved costly as England's clinically dispatched penalties ultimately proved the difference. Switzerland still are yet to advance beyond the quarter-final of a European Championship after suffering similar penalty heartbreak against Spain at the last tournament.

England, again, showed spirit to come from behind here. Just like against Slovakia, conceding first seemed to spur them on a level in performance as they upped the ante, Southgate took action with a triple substitution and was rewarded moments after with Saka's sublime leveller. Having now gone to Extra-Time twice (and triumphed twice), it will be a fast turnaround for England's semi-final on Wednesday night against either Turkey or The Netherlands. Goals continue to be a problem as despite creating good chances today, they only made one count before having to go to penalties. England fans will hope for a more clinical display in the semi-final.

ENGLAND ADVANCE - After a thrilling tie, it is England into the semi-final of Euro 2024! Embolo prodded Switzerland in front before Saka swiftly levelled. That took us into Extra-Time where chances came and went for both teams in a tense thirty minutes. To penalties we went and Akanji's early miss proves decisive in the shootout as England convert all five of their penalties to win 5-3!
