So next up in Euro 2024 are the quarter-finals and there are some huge matchups to come. None more so than Spain taking on Germany and Portugal playing France in a few days' time. Indeed, Turkey have booked their place to take on the Netherlands after that. But, that's all from me for this match between Austria and Turkey. I've been Danny Johnston, thanks for following along live on Tribe.
Austria will be devastated. They would have seen this match as a real opportunity to advance and qualify for the quarter-finals. Their football in the group stage was scintillating but they weren't able to capitalise in the knockout round. Defending set pieces let them down as they weren't able to deal with the Turkish corners. They bossed possession after going two goals down and threw plenty at Turkey delivering cross after cross. But, besides Gregoritsch nicking one goal back, they weren't able to find enough quality to send this game to extra time. They have certainly enhanced the reputation of Austrian football at this tournament. But this will hurt as Austria leave Germany at the round of 16 stage.
Three years on after Turkey were labelled as dark horses for the last Euros, they perhaps now are the true dark horses of this tournament. Without a win in any of their four matches coming into this tournament, many wouldn't have picked them to even make it out of the group. They came into this one as firm underdogs against a talented, high-performing Austrian side. But, they capitalised on two set-pieces with Demiral bagging an unlikely brace. They did not hold the ball anywhere near as well in the second half but they defended admirably. They put their bodies on the line to keep Austria at bay. Just. Gunok's save at the death will be remembered as one of the great moments. So now they can dare to dream as they reach the final eight.
ABSOLUTE SCENES IN LEIPZIG! Turkey are through to the quarter-finals! At the outset, nobody would have expected this! But they are into the final eight and a match-up with the Netherlands in Berlin awaits them.
90+5'
The goalkeeper is up for the Austrian corner and Sabitzer swings it towards him. It's over his head though and cleared by Turkey.
90+4'
WHAT A SAVE! GUNOK IS THE MATCH-WINNER! Last chance for Austria. Sabitzer launches it into the box. Demiral wins the first header but it is hooked back into the middle by Prass from the left. Baumgartner wins the header at the back post and nods it on target from a few yards out. Gunok dives across to his right and makes a heroic save. He pushes it behind with an outstretched right hand for an Austrian corner.
90+4'
SAVE! Bentz keeps Austria alive for a minute! Posch gets a cross into the middle from the right. It takes a slight deflection and Turkey clear. It's played through to Yilmaz who can run forward. He turns onto his right foot and sweeps his shot on goal towards the bottom right of the goal. Pentz dives down low to push it away.
90+3'
Danso lifts the ball out wide to Wober. He manages to nutmeg one defender but Ayhan was waiting behind to clear.
90+1'
Austria whip in a cross via Wober from the left. Gregoritsch gets his head to the ball but Bardakci is in close company to block his header with little knowledge of it. It deflects upwards to Yokuslu who smashes the ball away. Bardakci has now gone down with cramp and this will chew up precious seconds.
