Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as Joe Willock’s double helped Newcastle United overcome a boisterous Birmingham City in a brilliant fourth round FA Cup tie at St Andrews’ this evening! I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage: I’ve been Rory Morrow, and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - Birmingham resume their promotion chase in the league on Tuesday evening, when they host bottom side, Cambridge United. Newcastle have a week’s preparation before travelling to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City in the Premier League, next Saturday afternoon.
Newcastle showed excellent character to hold their nerve tonight and weather the atmosphere to emerge on top. Willock's two goals were both well taken whilst Wilson showed that Isak isn't the only top-class finisher at the club. Osula, in the first half, was unplayable out wide whilst Miley put himself about well in midfield. The energy across all of the team was infectious and Murphy epitomised that off the bench, creating chances before the winner, which Willock took so well. After reaching the Carabao Cup final in midweek, Newcastle are also through to the FA Cup's fifth round!
Birmingham really went for that, tonight. Even though automatic promotion back to the Championship is probably number one priority, they were right in Newcastle's faces from the get-go, Stansfield pressing relentlessly. The crowd really got into the game, especially when Laird and Itawa both found the top corner, Newcastle really had to weather the storm at times! Birmingham did tire as the game wore on but stayed in it until the end and can return to their promotion push, buoyed by such a good showing against Premier League opposition!
NEWCASTLE HOLD ON TO EDGE A THRILLER - Birmingham City are beaten as Newcastle United make a good week even better by progressing to the FA Cup's fifth round! This was classic Cup chaos with Birmingham posing Newcastle plenty of problems throughout: They led inside a minute when Laird struck from a corner. Despite rotating heavily, Newcastle's quality shone through as, in five first half minutes, they turned the tables with Willock and Wilson scoring to send them 2-1 up. Back battled Birmingham and Iwata volleyed in a screamer to restore parity before half-time. In the second half, tackles thundered in as the tension grew but Willock, eight minutes from time, snatched victory with a clinically taken second goal: It's The Magpies who emerge victorious from this enthralling game of football!

Birmingham attack one last time but Hanley's cross is plucked from the skies by Pope.

Taking no risks with Osula, Eddie Howe removes him and replaces him with Isak up front.

Osula and Klarer collide, aerially, on halfway with Osula coming off slightly worse for wear. Play's paused as he receives treatment, late on.
