TEAM NEWS: Southampton - Three suspensions means Russell Martin has been forced to shuffle the pack with four changes to the side that drew away at Brighton. Tyler Dibling, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, and Flynn Downes all miss out after picking up yellow cards on the weekend. Yukinari Sugawara also drops back to the bench, as James Bree, Nathan Wood, Joe Aribo, and Ryan Fraser come into the starting eleven. Aaron Ramsdale remains inured, meaning Joe Lumley continues in goal after making his Premier League debut on the weekend.
A three-goal victory at home to Aston Villa on the weekend has shone the spotlight on Chelsea, who have pushed up into second on the Premier League ladder, on a run of five games unbeaten. The Blues kept their first clean-sheet since September against Villa, and they turned it into a perfect afternoon with first half goals from Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez, before Palmer scored his eighth of the season to round out the win. With Arsenal facing a potentially tricky test against Manchester United elsewhere tonight, Enzo Maresca’s side have the chance to take full control of second on the ladder should they win and their opponents drop points. Adding to the confidence is the fact that Chelsea have won all four of their away games against clubs in the bottom half of the league ladder this season, scoring 12 and conceding just three. With the added attention comes added pressure though, and how the Blues deal with that little bit more expectation will be interesting to watch tonight.
Already four points adrift of their nearest rivals at the bottom of the Premier League ladder, the early signs suggest Southampton will be relegated straight back down to the Championship this season. Performances in recent weeks have suggested otherwise though, and Russell Martin’s side enjoyed their best month of the campaign in November, collecting four of their five total points from their season tally thus far. They picked up their first victory with a 1-0 win over Everton at St Mary’s, and showed some fight away at South Coast rivals Brighton last weekend too, claiming a very credible 1-1 draw, their first points on the road this season. Now the onus is on continuing to improve as they ramp up the fight for survival, but Southampton have a tricky run-in to Christmas, with home matches against Chelsea and Spurs, and trips to Villa and Fulham. Nevertheless they’ll have some newfound confidence with recent results, and will be determined to scrap for every single point over the coming weeks.
Hello and welcome to Tribe’s live commentary of this Premier League clash between Southampton and Chelsea. All the talk of the Blues being in a rebuilding phase has gone out the window in recent weeks, and they’ll be looking to solidify their position behind leaders Liverpool by making it six league games unbeaten against a relegation-threatened Saints side at the foot of the table. I’m Harrison Ryburn and I’ll bring you all the action from St Mary’s.
