So that's all from me then, make sure you stick around on Tribe for coverage of all your favourite sports, including West Ham hosting Aston Villa shortly. For now though, I'm Jonny Lawrence, and we'll see you next time.
An opening day win for Newcastle, and though it may not be the exact performance they were after, it's three points on the board. They face Bournemouth next up down on the south coast, while for Southampton it's back home to prepare for the visit of Nottingham Forest.
Saints had over 80% of the ball in the second half, racked up a dozen corners and had 19 attempts, but still couldn't find a way through. The defence was outstanding, but a lot of the hardwork was pulled in front of the backline, with Joelinton and Guimaraes both having brilliant outings, especially defensively. Burn was also dominant at the back, in a game with an excessive amount of corners and crosses.
A thrilling one nil win for ten-man Newcastle on the opening day at the St James then! It started out as you'd expect, with both teams pressing hard and looking to rush things a little. But then Schar was sent off, and the whole dynamic changed, with Saints suddenly holding the impetus on the ball. Newcastle pinched one through a McCarthy mistake just before the half, and the entire second 45 was all about whether Saints could break the hosts down.
NEWCASTLE HOLD ON!

SAVE! Saints push for one more late attack, and it's Edozie lifting a ball in once more, with Archer winning the header in the middle! But it's straight at Pope, who gleefully holds on!
90+4'
Amo-Ameyaw tees up Hardwood-Bellis for a floated ball in, but once again it's Joelinton in the road, six yards off his own line clearing out with a header. Newcastle try counter, but Edozie and Guimaraes tangle and the ref decides it goes Newcastle's way, earning Edozie a harsh yellow.

Newcastle put the big men in the wall and it pays off, with Joelinton jumping and catching it in the face.
