Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as Liam Delap’s double earned Ipswich Town a point against Aston Villa at Portman Road this afternoon; I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage; I’ve been Rory Morrow and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - Ipswich are away at the London Stadium next Saturday afternoon, facing West Ham United. Villa return to Champions League action in midweek by hosting Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening before entertaining Manchester United at home next Sunday afternoon.
Aston Villa played well in patches today but, aside from their well-taken goals, struggled to pen Ipswich in for long spells. Martinez, standing in as captain, atoned for letting Delap's first goal brush his hand with a couple of simply marvellous saves. Rogers, who's having a great season, dazzled on the left wing and even though Villa couldn't win today, they too continue what has been an excellent start to the season with this hard-earned point on the road.
So, although Ipswich's wait for a first Premier League win this season goes on, plenty of positives for them to take from today. Delap demonstrated a much-needed cutting edge up front, clinically taking both goals and proving an all-round pest to Villa's backline. Ipswich managed the game well, even when falling behind, with Morsy and Phillips instrumental in midfield. Their creative players, Clarke and Hutchinson, both shone with an assist each and they make it four matches unbeaten as they continue to quietly settle into Premier League life.
A THRILLER ENDS EVEN - A point apiece, then at the end of an extremely fun game of football at Portman Road! Delap's double earning Ipswich their fourth successive draw after Villa had roared back from behind to lead through strikes from Rogers and Watkins in the first half. Delap drew first blood eight minutes in, converting Clarke's cross before Rogers, set up by Watkins, replied for Villa. Watkins then glanced in a brilliant Bailey ball for a half-time lead. Martinez shone with two stunning saves to keep out Phillips and Delap. However, Ipswich found their leveller in the second half as an exceptional carry forward from Hutchinson found Delap who stroked home his second of the day to earn the promoted side a deserved share of the spoils.
