Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah both bagged braces as Liverpool scored six at Spurs to maintain their place at the top of the Premier League; I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage; I’ve been Rory Morrow, and I hope you have a very Merry Christmas. We look forward to seeing you again on Boxing Day when we’ll bring you all the festive football! In the meantime, take care and Merry Christmas.
Up Next - Spurs are away at Nottingham Forest before Liverpool host Leicester City at Anfield, with both matches taking place on Boxing Day.
Liverpool have their first league win in three (after drawing their last two) and in some style, too. All of their forwards shone but Diaz and Salah bagging braces just epitomises the richness of the resources that Slot can call upon in those areas. Szoboszlai ran the show in midfield, conducting attack after attack, and Liverpool always looked in control. There were a few lapses in concentration as Spurs scored three preventable goals but Liverpool really overwhelmed their hosts and this has to go down as one of their best performances of the season.
Not a good result for Ange Postecoglou as Spurs' defensive weaknesses are laid painfully bare. Whilst Liverpool sparkled going forwards, Spurs' gung-ho approach played into Arne Slot's hands as Liverpool repeatedly exploited the space gifted to them by the home side. Spurs kept going, even when 5-1 down, and scored a couple of great goals themselves. Yet, they were never really in the match, as a contest and Postecoglou will find himself under renewed pressure as they approach the end of 2024.
LIVERPOOL RUN RIOT TO CEMENT THEIR PLACE AT THE TOP - Liverpool take all three points after a nine-goal thriller sees them hold off Tottenham Hotspur to solidify their place at the top of the Premier League. In a helter-skelter match, first-half goals from Diaz and Mac Allister had Liverpool two up. Maddison pulled one back but, before the break, Liverpool restored the two-goal lead as Szoboszlai slotted in the third. Salah struck twice within seven minutes to take the game completely away from Spurs, who restored some pride when Kulusevski and Solanke both found the back of the net. Fittingly, though, it was Diaz who concluded the scoring (having started it) with a fine finish as The Reds run out comfortable winners.
90+5'
Alexander-Arnold, on the right, rolls it short to Elliott. Before he can cross, though, the flag is raised for offside against Nunez, in the middle of a busy six-yard box.
90+5'
Szoboszlai, pushing down the left wing, slings in a dangerous cross. Gray heads it behind for a corner...
90+4'
Jones, scuttling away from Bissouma, feeds Robertson, crossing the left side of halfway. The ball is rolled into Nunez, on the touchline. He lays it inside to Jota, who nudges it back to Elliott, just past the centre circle.
90+2'
Alisson, just outside his own penalty area, locates Gomez ahead of him. Gomez's pass down the line is intercepted well by Spence, on the left side of halfway. He pops the ball ahead to Werner as Spurs look to create another opening late on.
