Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as Manchester City came from behind to see off Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium in an entertaining encounter this evening: I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage: I’ve been Rory Morrow, and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - A pivotal week for Man City starts on Wednesday night when they aim to stay in the Champions League as they host Club Brugge here. They’re then at the Emirates Stadium next Sunday, away at fierce rivals, Arsenal. Chelsea don’t play again until the evening after, hosting West Ham at Stamford Bridge.
As for Chelsea, well, you can see the pros and cons of having such a youthful squad. To begin with, they tore into City right from the off, profiting from Khusanov's blunder and Palmer strutting around like the King of the Palace, back at his old club. Madueke menaced City's defence all night long with a goal and a fierce effort right on half-time. But when City got to grips with Palmer, Chelsea's chances suddenly evaporated as they couldn't stem the flow. Sanchez, in goal, was also caught in no man's land by Haaland for the second strike. A good performance, ultimately but a dispiriting result for The Blues, who need to reset, refocus and eradicate their patchy form of the past month if they're to harbour hopes of Champions League football next season.
An immensely satisfying night for Manchester City, then, in the end. Not that it started that way! With two debutants involved from the get-go, Khusanov was badly caught out on Chelsea's goal. Marmoush, meanwhile, the other new signing to start, played well, linking up nicely with City's other forwards and will fancy his chances of making an impact in a City shirt, this season. In the end, though, it was the dependable's who ultimately steered City through this awkward encounter with Gvardiol (such a threat going forwards) and Foden enjoying fine games, alongside, of course, Haaland who produced the momentum-changing second goal as City make it four Premier League wins from their last five.
MAN CITY COME FROM BEHIND TO LEAPFROG CHELSEA - A sublime 90 minutes wraps up with Man City winning and, in the process, moving one point ahead of Chelsea, who they complete the double over this season. It began nightmarishly for the Champions, though when debutant, Khusanov, laid on Chelsea's goal on a plate as Jackson assisted Madueke to strike, only three minutes in. Back came City, who levelled before half-time with Gvardiol finishing off good work from Nunes. Palmer, who'd been such a threat in the first half, was better nullified by City after the break and after bossing possession, Haaland took advantage of uncertain Chelsea defending to put City in front. As Chelsea spiritedly chased an equaliser, City added a third on the counterattack as the in-form Foden tucked home his sixth goal of the month, in the Premier League, to send the Etihad faithful home happy!
90+5'
CHANCE - Down the left wing, Cucurella wins Chelsea a late corner, off Kovacic. Neto delivers from the left, Chalobah wins a crucial flick-on and Colwill, charging in behind him, hammers the rebound over the crossbar from close range!
90+3'
Fernandez, controlling a bobbling ball inside the centre circle, sends it flat into the feet of Nkunku. He takes on City's defenders with a dazzling first touch but sees his cutback, from the right of the area, squeezed away by Foden, who's come back to help out his defence.
90+1'
CHANCE - Madueke gets in behind a dozing Gvardiol, down the right side of the box. Madueke's speed takes him dangerously close to the by-line but he does superbly to stay in and cross. It's hoofed away, hurriedly, by Gundogan, six yards out.
