Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as Brighton and Brentford couldn’t be split with the two teams playing out a scoreless stalemate at the Amex Stadium tonight: I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage: I’ve been Rory Morrow, and I look forward to seeing you again soon in 2025 for another live text commentary! Until then, stay safe and have a very Happy New Year!
Up Next - Brighton close out 2024 on Monday night as they’re in action at Villa Park. Brentford, two days later, commence 2025’s Premier League football when they host Arsenal at the Gtech Community Stadium on New Year’s Day.
In the circumstances, probably a more useful result for Brentford, tonight. Away from home, only their second point on the road this season and they managed the loss of goalkeeper, Flekken, very well as Valdimarsson looked solid after coming on. In front of him, Collins had a great game in central defence, making many vital interceptions to deny Brighton. Further forwards, the supply line to Wissa, Mbeumo and Schade was limited but they each looked threatening when they did get the ball. Still, on the road, a point and away clean sheet in the bank, hard-earned this evening, is a good result for The Bees.
Not a bad point for either team but Brighton will feel they should have won, especially with the first-half openings they created. Enciso hit the post early but, too many times, Brighton shot straight at Flekken (and later, Valdimarsson). Their second-half chances were less clearcut but they still struggled to unlock a sturdy, deep-lying Brentford backline. Adingra, off the bench, was extremely positive and posed the visitors no end of problems with his direct running and pace. But Brighton must take a point and go again as they look for their first win since November next time out.
STALEMATE AT THE AMEX - A point and a clean sheet each, at the end, for Brighton and Brentford, who cannot be split after ninety minutes of football. In a good game, Brighton hit the post four minutes in through Enciso. Brentford then saw a goal chalked off by VAR, who ruled Wissa to be in an offside position. The Seagulls posed slightly more questions before the break but Brentford, with an enforced change of goalkeeper, held firm. While Brentford were content to sit deep and counter, Brighton were lacking in penetration in the final third, unable to pick the crucial, final, right pass and so, didn't overly extend Valdimarsson, in goal. It ends as it began: goal-less.
90+5'
CHANCE - Adingra's corner, from the left, is punched away by Valdimarsson, well. The ball comes to March, on the right-hand-side of the box. He cuts inside, hoping for the heroic return, but curls his left-footed strike wide and high of the far left-hand-corner.
90+4'
Minteh, found on the underlap by Adingra, blasts a ball across the box from the left. Collins does very well to boot it behind for a late, Brighton corner...
90+3'
Roerslev, inside his own half, charges past Adingra, down the right-hand touchline. The Brentford man can't, though, beat Estupinan on halfway who wins possession back for the hosts.
90+1'
Valdimarsson, on the edge of his own box, boots the ball long. van Hecke heads the ball down, beating Wissa aerially, but it's gathered by Yarmoliuk, inside the centre circle, for the away side.
