Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as Brighton roared back to take a point against a lacklustre Arsenal at the Amex Stadium this evening: I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage: I’ve been Rory Morrow, and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - FA Cup third round duty beckons for both next weekend as Brighton travel to Carrow Road next Saturday afternoon, taking on Championship side, Norwich City. Arsenal, before their own third-round tie, have another Cup competition to navigate as they host Newcastle United in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday evening. The Gunners then face old foes, Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon, in a potential tie-of-the-round clash.
A real contrast of halves that, for Arsenal. Whilst they didn't set the stage alight in the first half, they were in control thanks to Nwaneri's individual bit of brilliance. Yet, they utterly lost their way when the penalty was awarded and, being frank, are fortunate that a more ruthless side didn't punish their second-half poorness. Jesus, in form coming into this one, didn't get any sort of service while the midfield was overran after the interval. Not a disastrous point but Arsenal's margin for error as they chase down Liverpool at the top is fast closing, with each dropped point.
Having been restricted by Arsenal in the first half, Brighton burst into life once they equalised. Pedro, who's now scored equalisers twice against Arsenal this season, was immense up front and most certainly demonstrated why he was trusted to captain the team, with Dunk out. Minteh and Mitoma added an impact from the bench whilst Baleba, in midfield, worked relentlessly to stop Arsenal ever getting a foothold. Whilst the wait for a first win since November goes on, this point is certainly a good start to the New Year for Brighton.
ARSENAL ARE HELD AS BATTLING BRIGHTON TAKE A POINT - Arsenal decline the opportunity to close the gap to league leaders, Liverpool, to three points as they are made to pay for a lacklustre performance at the Amex Stadium. The Gunners led 16 minutes in when Nwaneri glided through to open the scoring. Brighton had fed on scraps but the momentum changed entirely when Pedro, a pest up front all night long, won a penalty off of Saliba's challenge. Pedro converted and Brighton looked the likelier team to go and get a winner: Disappointment for Arsenal but take nothing away from a superb second half from The Seagulls, who more than deserve their point this evening.
90+5'
CHANCE - Rice curls it in, right-footed. Calafiori, amidst a melee of players jostling inside the box, heads it over! Could that be Arsenal's last chance of a winner?
90+4'
Ayari jumps in late on Odegaard, centrally. A late chance for Arsenal to load the penalty box...
90+3'
CHANCE - Jesus battles for the ball inside the penalty box, wresting it away from Webster. He tees up Trossard, arriving inside the area, who, under pressure, balloons an effort over the top, to the delight of the home crowd.
90+2'
Rice, inside his own half, finds Calafiori down the left-hand-side. He uses Trossard who returns the ball into the left-back's run. His smacked ball across the face of goal is steered away by Baleba, for Brighton.
