Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as substitute, Darwin Nunez, dramatically netted an injury time brace to break Brentford hearts and cement Liverpool’s place at the top of the Premier League: I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage: I’ve been Rory Morrow, and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - Brentford are on the road next weekend, travelling to Selhurst Park to play Crystal Palace next Sunday afternoon. Liverpool have two home games before then as first, they host Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday evening. That precedes the Premier League visit of Ipswich Town, to Anfield, on Saturday afternoon.
The late, late show for Liverpool then! Having looked like they'd be leaving the Gtech Community Stadium frustrated, Nunez popped up twice at the death. And twice, he produced clinical, unerring finishes, under huge pressure, what that could do for his confidence is huge as he demonstrates again the value he brings to Liverpool's squad. Whilst far from sloppy, the Reds did struggle to break Brentford down in the second half and it took Arne Slot to make five changes before Liverpool's pressure really ramped up. But after two draws in their last two league games, nobody of a Liverpool persuasion will care about much other than the fact that this win keeps them firmly in control of the Premier League's title race!
Defeat in that manner is always a bitter pill to swallow and it will sting for Brentford, that loss. Having had the joy of scoring late in injury time against Man City last time out, today The Bees feel the other end of it. Brentford really put it up to Liverpool all afternoon with Collins and van den Berg exceptional and Mbeumo, as always, posing problems on the counterattack. They had chances, despite not overly extending Alisson in goal and Thomas Frank's job will be to lift his players up from the agony of this defeat to channel what was a fine performance into their next couple of matches.
NUNEZ'S LATE DOUBLE KEEPS LIVERPOOL ON TRACK - Liverpool have their first Premier League win of 2025 and in dramatic style, too! Nunez is the hero, coming off the bench to net twice in injury time and transform what was going to be two dropped points into all three for Arne Slot's side! It's awfully cruel on Brentford, who had played with such discipline, heart and attacking verve, themselves. But Liverpool's squad depth once again comes to the fore. So often, Nunez is noticed for his misses: Today, he'll be remembered as Liverpool's match-winning hero!

NUNEZ SURELY SEALS THE WIN NOW - What an ending to this match as Liverpool secure victory, at the very end! This one is also finished by Nunez as Chiesa picks up the ball on halfway and drives down the right. He feeds Elliott, scampering ahead of him centrally and entering the box. Elliott assesses his options and alertly locates Nunez to his left with a pinpoint weight of pass to The Uruguayan. A good first touch allows Nunez to move in-field centrally and rifle an emphatic finish high into the centre of the goal from 10 yards out! Heartbreak for Brentford: Ecstasy for Liverpool!

NUNEZ SCRAMBLES IT IN AT THE DEATH - Liverpool strike as the clock ticks into injury time! That could be a huge goal for their title ambitions! Elliott strides into the penalty area, feeding the overlapping Alexander-Arnold down the right. Although Jensen blocks his initial cross, Alexander-Arnold regathers near the by-line and composedly crosses again as the ball comes to him. There, in the middle is Nunez who connects perfectly, striking high into the middle of the net from six yards out, a monumental moment for Liverpool! As he peels off his shirt in celebration, the referee books him in the aftermath: Not that Nunez is likely to care too much about that!
