Up Next - Brentford have a clear week to prepare for a trip to Bournemouth, in next Saturday’s teatime match. Villa, meanwhile, host Club Brugge here in the 2nd Leg of the Champions League Last 16 on Wednesday evening, as they seek to build on their 3-1 advantage to reach the quarterfinals.
That was really resolute from Villa, this evening. They had to scrap their way through the match and boy, did they scrap. Once Watkins had put them ahead, Villa's game-management was canny and that of a team who know how to get wins, even when they're not playing at their best. Watkins relished his role, at his old club, of course linking play brilliantly and scoring an excellent goal. Defensively, Villa were immense: Disasi shone in the physical duels, Digne kept Mbeumo quiet (which not many full-backs can say this season) and goalkeeper, Olsen, in for Martinez, proved a more than able deputy, with an authoritative, confident display, ending in a hard-earned clean sheet.
Brentford today came up against a Villa backline that, simply, would not be breached. Disasi and Digne excelled in their one-on-one duels with Schade and Mbeumo. The end result being that Wissa, up front, was very isolated and didn't receive the usual service as he would when the wingers are on form. Brentford also got exposed for pace in the goal they conceded with Villa's attackers slicing through, with ease. Thomas Frank will be annoyed at how this game got away from them but there's still a good part of the season remaining for Brentford to push on, as they pursue a top-half finish. Which would, for the club's resources, be an excellent acheivement.
ASTON VILLA HOLD ON FOR A BIG WIN - Watkins' second half strike proves to be the winner as Aston Villa triumph, away at Brentford, to give their Premier League push a much-needed three points! Villa probably just about deserved that, today: They were excellent defensively with Disasi excelling at right-back and always posed a threat on the counter. Villa proved this with the well-taken goal from Watkins and quickly made attack that led to Rogers striking, only for VAR to disallow the goal for an offside in the buildup. Brentford threw the kitchen sink at Villa in the closing stages but lacked the penetrative final pass, as they fall to a frustrating home loss.

Mbeumo pins back the ears and flies away down the right wing. Mbeumo looks up and curls a cross into the middle: Wissa would get there only for decisive goalkeeping from Olsen, who rushes out and strongly secures the ball in his grasp, on his own penalty spot. Safe to say, his defenders all congratulate him for that!
