Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as Marco Asensio’s second-half brace earned Aston Villa a dramatic comeback win over a struggling Chelsea this evening at Villa Park: I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage: I’ve been Rory Morrow, and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - More Premier League action for both in the upcoming week with Villa at Selhurst Park to play Crystal Palace on Tuesday night. Chelsea are also playing that evening, hosting bottom-side, Southampton at Stamford Bridge.
A bit of a collapse that, from Chelsea. They were in control early on, Fernandez firing them ahead inside nine minutes. But it was an initiative that they surrendered really quite meekly in the second half, with Villa getting on top of the duels and shutting down the wide flanks, where Nkunku and Neto shone in the first half. Both goals coming from set-pieces will also be a concern as will Jorgensen's error for the second goal, Enzo Maresca unable to decide on his first-choice goalkeeper, at the minute. It's a worrying second half display, in keeping with recent form, as Chelsea's festive slump continues, costing them more and more points as we move into Spring.
Brilliant for Aston Villa, who reinvigorate their Premier League push for a top-four spot with this win. Two of Unai Emery's January buys came good in the second half with Rashford, on at half-time, providing two assists and a brilliant, driving presence on the left wing, that reminds us all of his talent. Asensio's finishes were both clinical and calmly taken, in a chaotic match, while Villa's defence got to grips with Chelsea's speedy youngsters after the interval, nullifying Chelsea for large spells of the second half. Villa Park erupted at full-time and this is certainly three points for the home side to savour!
ASENSIO THE HERO AS ASTON VILLA COME BACK TO BEAT CHELSEA - A terrific second half display from Aston Villa as they come from behind to defeat Chelsea with January signing, Asensio, netting both, crucial, goals in the comeback! It was a result that was difficult to envisage when Chelsea dominated parts of the first half, scoring through Fernandez, but Villa stuck to their gameplan and really penned Chelsea back during the second half, Asensio's first goal giving them the momentum to go on and win it. It's a huge victory for Unai Emery and a defeat that keeps Chelsea's bad run going!
90+6'
Out on the left wing, Neto beats Garcia for speed, getting the ball back to Sancho, in a crossing position. Sancho's ball in is good but so too is Konsa's clearing header as he towers up high, on his own penalty spot, to nod the ball away for Villa.
90+5'
Gusto, on the right wing, gives up possession with a poor pass inside to Fernandez, which Tielemans cuts out, on the stretch. Chelsea win it back, though as Fernandez finds Palmer, wriggling down the right, Maatsen holds him up with an excellent tackle on the left-edge of the box, forcing Palmer to pass back inside.
90+3'
Malen wastes a couple of seconds by expertly holding the ball down by the left corner, with Palmer and Gusto both frustrated bystanders, unable to pinch it off him. Eventually, James does with a strong tackle, but Chelsea will have to build from midway inside their own half.
