Wimbeldon fought hard in contrast, and found a way to frustrate their far more fancied Premier League opposition, with a very disciplined and organised defence. Johnnie Jackson opted for five at the back, and it worked to a tee, disrupting the Newcastle attack, and finding a way to keep the likes of Osula, Almiron, and Barnes on a leash. They conceded few chances, and captain Joe Lewis was a clear stand-out with his defensive work at the back. The Dons lacked a target man going forward though, and struggled to get any go-forward on the counter, failing to create anything of note throughout the match. It's a shame they couldn't reward the travelling fans with a goal, but ultimately they were outplayed through the middle of the pitch, and the Dons make a Carabao Cup exit at the third round, after a strong run.
