West Ham run out comfortable two-goal victors, ending Newcastle's hot run of form at St James Park. Make sure you join us again on the weekend for more Premier League action, starting with Brighton and Southampton on Friday night. It's been a pleasure bringing you this one tonight. For now, Harrison Ryburn signing out.
Next up for Newcastle is a trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday, where they'll look to bounce back against a struggling Eagles outfit. Meanwhile, West Ham return to action against London rivals Arsenal. Whether they can take any momentum into the clash will be of great interest.
Not a good night for Newcastle in response, who have lost all their momentum after recording two consecutive Premier League wins before the international break. They looked well off the pace, and the 16-day break really showed. Eddie Howe's side failed to piece it altogether in the final third, and lacked a cutting edge for large stages, struggling to create many clear chances. For all the possession and territory they had, the Magpies really should have tested Fabianski a lot more too, and they'll be dissapointed they couldn't get Isak more involved up top. It's a big setback for Eddie Howe's men, and they're now going to have to recuperate and reset again, heading into the Festive season.
A big result for the Hammers, who had shipped seven goals combined across their last two away games. They were much improved defensively tonight though, and despite coming under pressure, took charge, and did well to smother Alexander Isak and his supporting frontline out of the game. Both Todibo and Kliman were rock solid, whilst Fabianski took charge of his box well. Wan-Bissak and Emerson crucially acted as springs on the counter for West Ham, and got the visitors going forward out of their own half on many occasions. The hold up play of Bowen and Antonio on the attack was also good to see, and Lopetegui will walk away with plenty of positives from an impressive all-round performance.
Fulltime at St James Park and West Ham have recorded a two-goal win over Newcastle, their first over the Magpies since 2021, and just a second since 2019. A header from Thomas Soucek opened the scoring inside the first ten minutes, before Aaron Wan-Bissaka doubled the advantage at the start of the second half to seal the deal for the Hammers, ending a two-game winless run. They were on the back foot for long stages, but caught out the Magpies with their work on the counter, and the hosts ultimatelty looked rather flat. It will go down as just Loptegui's second away victory as West Ham manager, and they pick up a fourth win of the season.
90+6'
Tonali wins a free kick inside the attacking half, and he encourages his teammates to get into the box. The delivery is whipped into the back post, where Coufal gets up to nod clear with a strong head.
90+5'
The stadium is emptying rapidly now, and the home fans will be left very frustrated by this Magpies performance. The ball is back with Kelly on halfway, as West Ham maintain their disciplined low block.
90+3'
Barnes comes forward down the left, and lays it off for Trippier in midfield. The latter runs into traffic though, and the ball bounces around in midfield, before West Ham hack clear into the attacking half.
90+2'
Murphy tries a delivery into the back post off the right, but Coufal leaps in front of Barnes to nod behind for a corner. The resulting set-piece doesn't cause too many problems, and Wilson ends up swiping a weak half-volley straight into the welcoming arms of Fabianski.
