Thanks for joining me here on Tribe as strikes from Timo Werner and Pape Sarr earned Tottenham Hotspur a thrilling 2-1 win over Manchester City to reach the Carabao Cup quarterfinals; I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage; I’ve been Rory Morrow and I look forward to seeing you again soon for another live text commentary!
Up Next - Back to Premier League action at the weekend as Spurs host Aston Villa here on Sunday. Twenty-four hours earlier, City are away at Bournemouth.
Manchester City, who left Haaland as an unused substitute, grew into the game as it went on. Ultimately, they're punished for their sluggish start, though. Nunes played well in midfield, taking his goal clinically whilst youngsters, Wright and Simpson-Pusey were steady off the bench. Likewise Spurs, they'll be concerned by the injuries they attained; City lost Akanji in the warmup and Savinho on a stretcher in the second half.
A big result, that, for Tottenham Hotspur who progress to the last eight of this competition. This was a performance and a result that responded to the disappointment of last weekend's loss at Crystal Palace. Werner's goal, his first of the season, was superbly taken and The German unnerved City's backline all evening. With two assists and a spiky pressing presence, Kulusevski also led from the front. One worry will be the early loss of van de Ven to injury, they'll hope that's not a serious issue as the fixtures continue to come thick and fast.
SPURS ELIMINATE MANCHESTER CITY TO REACH THE CARABAO CUP QUARTERFINALS - What a night and what a win for Tottenham Hotspur! Manchester City are out of the Carabao Cup, with Spurs going on to reach the last eight. They led within five minutes when Werner coolly finished after fine play from Johnson and Kulusevski. A stunning strike from Sarr, from range, doubled the lead midway through the half. Right on half-time, though, Nunes met Savinho's cross to reduce the arrears. Into a frantic second half, then, and both teams had chances to score again. However, Spurs defended fantastically from the front and kept City relatively at arm's length to seal a memorable Cup victory!
90+5'
Stones, charging forward with the ball at his feet, looks for and locates Silva on the right. Gliding away from Udogie, Silva's cross in is headed towards goal by Nunes but he sends his header over the bar from fifteen yards out. The home fans ramp up the atmosphere as they try to see their side over the line, here.
90+3'
CHANCE - Kovacic goes on a lungbusting run up-field, past halfway, all the way to the edge of the box. Looking left, he squares the ball to Wright in acres of space, centrally. Wright lets fly first-time, smacking his well-hit effort only just wide of the left-hand post! Tottenham get the goal kick.
90+2'
O'Reilly, on the right-hand touchline, passes in-field to Silva. He switches it to Wright, who drives down the left, curling a cross in. Udogie, ten yards out from his own goal, composedly clears up-field.
